Watching MVDP win here makes me wonder again, why do cyclocross bikes have drop handlebars? It makes no sense. They should use straight bars.

Would not be Cyclo -Cross then.. ! Cross is a diff beast entirely.. Some guys in 70s tried straight bars. They were always well off the pace.

Fit through tighter gaps, better for sprinting, more aero on faster courses, easier to shoulder, more hand positions. Most of all it wouldn't be cyclocross without drop bars, same reason there's a 33mm tyre width limit.
