van der Waal's Equation for NON-Ideal Gases

If a gas isn't ideal, then PV=nRT won't cut it. In fact, the values you get from the ideal gas law can be 10-20% different from what you get in real life.
the Van der Waals equation for non-ideal gases fixes that - but you need the van der Waals constants a and b, which account for intermolecular interactions and non-zero volume of molecules.

I can not express how grateful I am that you made this. self teaching is really hard... especially when you are not given a single example of how to rewrite it. Thank you ♥

Hello Mr. ChemisNate, Thank you for creating this video. This helps a lot. I had a hard time understanding the van der Waals equation before but thanks to you I now know how to use the equation and solve a basic problem. I'm looking forward to see more of your videos. Happy Teachers' Day Mr.ChemistNate! Have a great day! PS. I did subscribed 😊

How can you answer this question. Use the vander waal equation to calculate the pressure of 1.00Mol of cl2 in a volume of 30.0L at a temperature of 600.0K and determine the relationship between the vander waal and ideal equation

Thanks for the example and thorough explanation. Like others have said, keep the units...it's becoming a bad habit that students don't put them; please don't encourage it by not writing them down. Still, super job guy!

+ch4c2h6 My understanding is that all the "real gas" equations, tables, graphs and similar are empirical. The VdW could have indeed included the terms cubed, but empirically it was found that the terms squared gave a good approximation (and it is simpler), so square it is.

+ch4c2h6 I just checked in wikipedia. In fact, the square terms come from statistical thermodynamics considerations. Sorry... It is other ways for determining properties of "real gases" (mostly used in engineering) that are empirical...
