Vincent van Gogh was the most significant of the many artists who inspired Chinese-Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019). Discover more about Wong’s work and his artistic connection with Van Gogh in this exhibition.
Matthew Wong started drawing and painting in 2011, at the age of 27. Within the space of just a few years, he developed a highly personal style, using intense colours to paint imaginative landscapes. Van Gogh was a great source of inspiration for Wong. His influence is unmistakable, in terms of use of colour, the thickly applied brushwork and the personal themes in Wong’s work.
The exhibition is on view at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from 1 March until 1 September 2024.

Inspirador!!

Good overview…….I’ve thought of putting large video screens on my walls and have some high-definition photos showing on them. Perhaps next you could do longer periods at each painting and it’s written notes beside it. I long for a “van Gogh only” series as I like to spend a long time in front of his paintings. Do you think that’s possible?

Your camera starts getting close like someone who is drawn by interest, then turns away as someone who realizes it's not worth close inspection.

No offense, but why in the world would select such morose music?

I don't know if you know the story of Matthew Wong but it's very sad and I find the music fits the context. I'm done with people sugar coating everything in life

Having attended the exhibition I would say the music captures the feeling of the show quite well - stunningly beautiful and unique paintings but most tinged with a sense of melancholy.
