If you don’t like this song, you’re not a Van Halen fan. It’s a quiet classic/deep cut. And it’s the fellas Dad on the clarinet! How cool is that?!

Agreed. I enjoy all genres/types of music and dig this little ditty. For all hate Dave gets, it was his idea to have Ed & Al's dad play on this. I think he realized how cool it was to get the Van Halen's dad to play on song together. Gotta give him kudos for that.

I knew a guy in high school that could play just about any Van Halen riff. He thought he was Eddie. The problem is creating the stuff. The sound. Any body can copy. The problem is creation. Ed could create . This is a God given thing. The sound. That’s the deal.

Yes..but by breaking the code he teaches others to play it..he opens the door wider for more people who's parents aren't musicians to enter the party 🥳💌📫🪔✝️🕊️

I just had that conversation with a friend. We were talking about more average guitarists, but same principle. Just because a guy can copy someone's licks, that does not make you Van Halen, Malmsteen or Chet Atkins!!

That's exactly it. So many can play others creation note for note but they cannot compose music of any great caliber.

Even the best guitarists can't capture the swing in Eddies rhythm playing. It's what set him apart from *everyone*. Besides composing is a whole other level than copying.

When asked in 2015 who of all the musicians who had passed on would he like to jam with Ed said ‘MY FATHER’….If they are re-united now this recording here is the closest we left here on Earth will get to hear what they are sounding like together right now 😊❤

Yeah that was magic, the interviewer and live audience were thinking 'oooh, which great guitarist or musician would he want to jam with' but his answer was just so perfect. Seemed obvious in hindsight but I don't think anyone saw it coming.

If I not mistaken, the idea to have Mr.VH appear on the tracks was David Lee Roth’s. Despite everything that is said about him being arrogant, he truly did push the rest of the band members forward to be treated as stars also. In fact, it was him that suggested the name of the band Van Halen!
@144wychwood
@144wychwood 3 ай бұрын
Exactly! Dave himself would admit how big ego he had but not big enough to suggest naming band Van Halen and getting Ed & Al's father to play on this song. It was all for the betterment of the band.

What's a neat feature of this recording - Ted Templeman pushed Ed's lead guitar full left channel with only minor bleed on the right. This was a theme on all the Roth albums. There's no lead guitar here in this song, so Ed's rhythm guitar stays right while Jan's lead clarinet was panned full left. That's an incredible homage.

I remember being away camping and turning on the radio when I woke up and the only station was ABC classic (Australia) on AM... playing Big Bad Bill. When it finished the DJ announced that was Big Bad Bill by Van Halen with Jan Van Halen on clarinet. No mention of Eddie... Jan was the star here - and people outside of the traditional VH fans took notice. It put a smile on my face.

We don’t need a reductio ad absurdum analysis on Ed’s Beloved Father’s Clarinet recital technique. We all know his age then and that he was missing a finger…..The FEEL in what he was soloing was STILL brilliant…..Don’t make heartless statements like ‘the old man’ ..That was ED’S BELOVED FATHER.
