In the Spring of 2013, my then-fiancé (now wife) were at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya Mexico pool playing "Name That Tune" and I nailed this song in one note. Little did we know that one year later we'd MOVE to Panama to live without ever having been there. The song is actually about a car but it will always make me think of nuestra nueva patria! On a side note, I had breakfast with David Lee Roth at The Clock restaurant in Miami when the radio station I ran was doing a meet and greet promo. Turned out to be a really great guy...

"Panama" refers to the 1972 Lamborghini Miura owned by Eddie Van Halen. All of the lyrics refer to a car. About 2:40 into the official video, you'll hear the exhaust recorded from that car. I'm assuming Panama means Panama Red??

OK, so this song was about a car, so Panama isn't necessarily referencing the country. But back in the day, on the David Letterman show, Paul Shaffer and band would occasionally play Panama during the commercial breaks. Coming back from said commercial, Dave would sometimes say, "Answering the musical question, 'so where do you want this canal built?'". It was classic.

I love David Lee Roth Van Halen, but then I also love Sammy Hagar Van Halen. Diamond Dave's tracks seem more raunchy, Sammy's feel more straight up rock, but there are brilliant tracks everywhere! If you're doing 'Dance The Night Away' then you're loading up the DLR era, so here's a few suggestions from Sammy time. 'Dreams', 'When It's Love' and my favourite 'Poundcake' with its wall of guitar. Such great guitar music no matter which era.

Giving Alexia her due, I believe "Panama" and "The Heat Is On" are in the same key, "Pa" is the same note as "Heat", ""ma" is the same note as "on", and the harmonic rhythms of their choruses are reminiscent of each other...even the tempos are both about 120 bpm, no?

Nick, did you know that Van Halen's management before the first album was ever recorded, they didn't like DLR's singing and they wanted to replace him, guess who they tried to replace him with, Sammy Hagar but Sammy was already lead singing for Montrose and was contracted to stay in Montrose, so they had to stay with DLR.

When Sammy Hagar went into Van Halen, around 1985/86, I kind of lost interest but not totally, because David Lee Roth made Van Halen much more interesting, with his voice, his moves and acrobats, and sexiness lol. I saw David Lee Roth in 2004 and he still had it all. The song "When It's Love" (1988) was pretty good by Van Halen.

here's how I honestly feel about DLR's singing as opposed to Sammy Hagar's singing, I think the music, Eddie's guitar playing in the DLR era is more untamed than the Sammy era, maybe it's because as Eddie got older his music writing matured, the singing and music quality with Sam is better, less party time then with DLR, more serious and let's make more number 1 hit records with Sam and from what I remember every Sam album went to number 1, when you listen to Van Halen 1 you can hear and feel the rawness of the guitar playing, my opinion.

Fun song but lacks the crunchiness and hard rock vibe that made Van Halen soooo incomparable. This album was a Hot Girl multiplier at the live shows but OG fans were not as excited about this. Still very good though . Kevin11
