The audience was having much too much of a good time to realize that they were experiencing one of the greatest live performances by one of the greatest rock bands in history.

Nah. Most of us knew it at the time. There weren’t many bands back then that could touch VH live (not at the big stadium shows at least), and by ‘81 that was a pretty well known fact. However yes, we were too busy living in the moment to contemplate such things. This was where VH peaked, and I say this as someone who saw them on every U.S. tour they did from ‘79 through ‘84. Fair Warning was their absolute pinnacle, both as a live act and as songwriters.

One thing I should probably amend to my last comment is that I don’t necessarily think that Fair Warning is better than the first album, but first albums (by any band) are typically always the best because all or most the songs on them were written and developed over the course of several years. Albums like Fair Warning, that were written on the fly between tours are much more of a challenge to get right, and VH rose to the challenge beautifully. I’d say it could almost go toe to toe with the first album.

Throw the audio of these splendid 1981 Oakland treasures in the "middle' of the 1979 NY footage before Bottoms Up and Damn if we do not have a great Real Van Halen 6 song "Live EP"!

To the uploader - great job with the editing and with cleaning this up a bit. It looks and sounds better than ever (and this is some footage I’m extremely familiar with). Excellent. I wish there was some way to see the entire gig, but at this point I’m pretty sure there’s no way to do that. All I know is that this is a great little document of a band at the absolute peak of their powers. As a live stadium act, no one else could touch VH in ‘81. Not Cheap Trick, not AC/DC. Those of us who got to witness this at the time were a privileged lot.

What a band Van Halen might have been live on stage... if Roth had just bothered to actually sing.

Something I never noticed before. Eddie starts the show with that red and white striped shirt. Then it is gone later in the set.. And now some chick in the audience is wearing it @10:18
