I remember when this came out. I spent half my life at the age of 16 trying to learn it, never once realizing that it might have been layered and overdubbed. I got the song after the melody comes in, but this entire intro stumped me to pieces.
@ejsinner15206 жыл бұрын
JT Michaelson same here at 13 except I had a feeling it was layered just couldn't prove it cuz I didn't know how I was only 13 lol. Now ya know why every drummer out there can't play the intro exactly like the recording and resort to just keeping the bass drum pattern consistent like Alex does live. Keep bashin!

@@ejsinner1520 Alex played it live on the 1984 tour. Not sure why he quit playing it except for the fact he was in his late 50s when the band started playing it again live. Still played it on Van Halen’s final tour when he was in his mid 60s. I’m sure it took a lot of energy for him to play the song at that age. They also usually played it during the 2nd half of the set so to play it and play it with the intro would of probably been too much energy. That or he didn’t just think it was that big of a deal to play it. I wish they would of played it with Hagar in the 90s because Alex was at his absolute best during that era and the intro would have sounded epic on those 90s kits. =\/-|-|=

Is the intro an overdub of double bass? Or is it really low toms at first and then kick comes in?
@tanneryordan Жыл бұрын
the kick and one of the toms from the intro were electronic drums. the tom was “tuned” very similarly to the bass drum which makes it sound confusing/impossible
@thefilmpoets Жыл бұрын
@@tanneryordan wow thanks. I never knew that. Where did you hear about this?
@tanneryordan Жыл бұрын
@@thefilmpoets Alex started using Simmons electronic drums in 83, replacing his toms and bass drums from 83-86 (maybe later) live. Though he used Roto-toms in the studio for the 1984 album, he used Simmons bass drums for the whole album. The only use of the tom pads was on this track; in the intro and in the fills during the song. Ted Templeman, their producer, has famously muddied the waters by incorrectly remembering recording eddie's lamborghini for the intro, when it was actually used for the idle and whoosh sounds during the Panama breakdown. I recently got confirmation from a really good source that Alex did in fact play the intro himself, no lamborghini involved, though it's clear there is some inspiration from the sounds of classic cars/motorcycles. If you know what the early Simmons drums sounded like, it's not hard to hear. I don't think some people even know about the electronic drums which is why people get confused about the tones of the drums.

@@eriklarson9137 Greg Renoff, the guy that wrote Van Halen Rising, also wrote a book with Ted Templeman. Page 342, 3rd paragraph, Ted says this “ Donn and I also worked with Alex on his trademark intro for the song. There’s one thing about the drum part that flies under the radar, if you listen to the very beginning, it doesn’t sound like a drummer, it’s too random of a pattern. That’s because the first 5 seconds are the Lamborghini exhaust, then Al’s electronic drums come in. It took Donn a long time to get the exhaust to match the sound of the Simmons”. “Crosstalk” at work, my friend. Sometimes on old tape systems you can solo specific tracks and still faintly hear some others that aren’t soloed. Kind of an odd thing, but that might be the case here. Whoever had access to the “Hot for Teacher” master tape must’ve just soloed Alex’s drum group when bouncing down the stem, and not thought about the guitar crosstalk.
