When I hear both solos, I usually gravitate towards VH over Vai. His solos catch you like a wave. Vai diddles too much, and many people hate that. Many guitarists don't realize that. I know, Vai is great, and the solo work he did for crossroads is some of his best work, but VH really is more listenable.
@supercent6667 жыл бұрын
No doubt Steve Vai is a very technically proficient guitarist. But he's also a one trick pony who always blows his load on the first song leaving the rest of the performance sounding like a flaccid tape loop playing the same song over and over. IMO I'll take EVH anytime.
@daedal96447 жыл бұрын
VH today is nowhere near Vai, so you're right. I saw VH in 08 with Roth and VH did well but Vai is obviously better in this era. However, Van Halen's Roth records are way better than anything Vai has ever came out with. Vai would probably tell you that himself.
@daedal96447 жыл бұрын
I've listened from his Zappa days to his solo work. Vai made great music, but Van Halen (Roth years) is untouchable. I can't believe I'm having this debate. Vai was influenced by VH. You can hear it in his playing. Btw are you even a guitarist? Have you ever tried the ice cream man solo? The stretch in the start of it is painful. Most guitarists end up tapping it but it doesn't sound as smooth. I can play the Crossroads solo dude lol, so can a lot of other players. Its not that great of an accomplishment. It's sounds harder than it is. It does sound awesome though so I'll give you that.
@daedal96447 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand my point. Vai is obviously better than VH as a player. I mentioned that already. I'm referring to his music. Van Halen's music is timeless. Running with the devil, Jamie's crying, Jump.. People will always want to hear that over Vai's music. I hear Holdsworth in Vai's playing, and I hear VH in Vai's playing. Vai did say in an interview that VH influenced him. It on KZbin somewhere. VH plays in a box pattern because he never learned about modes. That doesn't make him a bad player. The reason why people love his songs is because a grade schooler can learn them. I have to lay this out for you. You've been playing longer than I have, but you're still in that "guitar athletics" stage. I can play in any club because I understand that the public can care less about how technical I am. Of course they want to be impressed but they eventually want to sing along. I left my safe spaces a long time ago. It's 2017

I was skeptical that I would have a good time..figuring Roth would do a set of solo stuff only. I've seen many bands over the years but I must admit...this show and Roth were spot on. His vocals were perfect.. the mic stand twirling amazing..the band was freaking tight and hit all the cues with perfection. Ice Cream Man was amazing and powerful in that 2000 seat auditorium.
