I completely agree and it makes me so grateful I had a father who introduced me to bands like led zeppelin and the rolling stones etc which put me on the path of fantastic music. Of my two kids, my son who will be 31 next month followed me on that path. I feel the same about the Van Hagar era. DLR was too flamboyant, but Sammy was just a regular guy with a voice that just seemed like it was made to be a part of VH, which catapulted him into being as well known as he's become. My kids didn't even know he was a solo artist prior to joining Van Halen.

I’m 50. This is the best version of this song by far and it’s live. The studio version was indoors, dubbed and Eddie played both guitar and keyboard. Not here. So awesome. @@yrmthr AB-so-LUTELY !!! People forget that Sammy _was_ the lead guitarist in Montrose back in the '70s. I saw him as a solo act, opening for ZZ Top back in' 83. He & his band were amazing, and I enjoyed his set as much or even more than ZZ's. 😎 I then saw him with VH in '86, I believe literally a couple days after the concert this video was excerpted from (this concert was New Haven, CT; my friends and I caught them in Worcester, MA). VH was incredible with Sammy. For "Ain't Talkin Bout Love", Sammy went to the top of a ~100-foot scaffolding on the stage 😱 ("I've been to the edge, and there I stood and looked down..."). INDEED ! 🤣

My 3rd comment on this particular video! Can't help it but this is the epitome of the times and it honestly makes me sad and very nostalgic every time I try to watch it! Godspeed EDDIE VAN HALEN! Feel like a personal loss and sammy is really the only way to rock the world the van halen way whether you like it or not you gotta love it!!! Thanks for everything you did for us boys,what a time to be alive, never gonna get over this because someone like EVH and SH or DLR should never be taken for granted or ever forgotten because there will never be anyone like them ever again!

I was 8 yrs old when Van Halen released their first album. My uncle and friends older brothers played it alot and I remember liking it so much. Fast forward 1986, 16 years old heard "5150" and thought who gets to experience the same band twice for the first time? Van Halen will always be part of my DNA. For a kid growing up in an east L.A. suburb in southern california, man, what memories! Shred in peace Edward🎸

Dude, exactly the same for me. We are the same age. I remember hearing VH for the first time at some kids swim party, and immediately thinking,’The lead singers name is Van Halen? And they just did a debut album, but right after that, put out another? Whoa.’ Then, the summer of 86 hit. I was 16, patiently waiting for summer practice to start before becoming a freshman. My life consisted of talking on the phone all day, eating bologna sandwiches, learning how to play 5+ drum cadences, field show, street marching, and 5150 album. It seemed like it was just on a constant loop that Summer. The Cure Japanese Whispers and VH 5150. Fast fwd two years, that July I went to my first concert, performed for two presidents, played at the first game of the World Series. But that concert …I fell in love that day, and I’ve been in love since with Sam, Ed,Alex & Mikie. Monsters of Rock @ LA Coliseum. 🤘🏼

I don't understand the hate Sammy Hagar gets for having been Van Halen's singer. I think both SH and DLR contributed greatly to the band and both versions of VH had amazing success. So there's no reason why we should love one singer and hate the other.

Grew up with Dave in Van Halen, loved it! BUT, when Sammy joined, rock n roll was the best in my 60 years on the planet. Dave was a great frontman. Sammy is a musician- he could actually sing, the lyrics were better, and he could play guitar on the same stage as Eddie. You’re absolutely correct, both versions of the band are great. But the Sammy era is better, there is really no debate.

DLR and Sammy were completely different and it's silly to compare them! They had their own strengths. Sammy was more polished and Dave more wild. Two different types of frontmen and both worked well with Ed in their respective eras. Sammy really shines here! Love seeing Ed's proud smile like, "This is what I have ALWAYS wanted!" But, once they started wanting different things, they split.

It was the ahole brother, Alex, who drove the biggest wedge between Sammy and Eddie. Sorry to be blunt, but it _needs_ to be said. I haven't yet read Sammy's book, but he alluded to this in an interview he gave at the time he was promoting it a few years ago. Alex may be a very good drummer, but I've lost all respect for him as a human being. He's basically responsible for breaking up one of the best rock bands the world will ever see.

I think Sammy and Eddie brought out the best in each other musically 🎼. Sammy could concentrate on lyrics. Eddie could expand on more than a 🎸 hero. Mike and Sammy vocals mesh perfectly. Lets not forget Alex on the 🥁. When focused they were untouched.

THIS was the highwater mark for Van Halen my friends,, hitting on all cylinders, happy and cranking out the best rock ever. Maybe it was ordained as Sammy was hired just as the band was evolving into a greater, deeper, more complex style with much more complex songs, more complex to write, to play, and to sing. Also, Sammy was a co-writer on most if not all of those deeper, heavier metal songs as well as the love songs. I seriously doubt that Roth could have co-written those far greater songs., Also, Sammy had been in Montrose and was an accomplished electric guitarist who could open songs (eg. Official version of Love Walks In) when Eddie was playing the keys and provided fills as well. Meanwhile, Roth had last been strutting around in lambfur covered cowboy chaps. Hagar was and still is a legit 4 tool rocker, with his own band and a very large following. Meanwhile Roth is where, doing what?

I think it was an amazing choice for Van Halen to hire a frontman who could also play lead guitar. It meant that Eddie could play other stuff and Sammy could cover the guitar, and the songs would still be great.
