Not only did Eddie want to join Kiss, but when he decided he'd rather start his own band with his brother, Gene Simmions still wanted to produce them. They frequently contradict themselves lol. Like in the slayer episode they say if your gonna listen to thrash you should listen to Metallica and in the Metallica episode they say you should listen to Slayer. I feel like the show is part satire, partly they’re genuine feelings and thoughts and a good amount of trash talking all the terrible and cringe things certain bands and artists do. They mean and don’t mean what they say. Like they may recognize that Led Zepplin rocked but that they also point out how they lifted a bunch of blues music but perhaps inwardly acknowledging they lifted it well. Also dated 14 year olds. Also I know I’ve heard them making positive remarks toward David Bowie but they had a great episode on him none the less

These guys do not impress me at all. Of course Van Halen was more popular after Jump and with Hagar, and of course Metallica was more popular after the Black Album; that's because they had watered down and commercialized their sound to broaden their appeal; it isn't an indication that they got better. Yeah, if you water down your sound to the point that soccer moms and middle aged corporate executives and little girls and grandmas can get into it you're gonna get played more broadly and sell a lot more albums. Their lead guitar rant is kinda pointless because Eddie Van Halen was both a rhythm and a lead guitarist. I agree rhythm guitar is more important than lead guitar but that's because the rhythm guitar is essentially driving the melody and it's the song that really matters not technical proficiency. Also, the fact that many people can play Eruption note for note doesn't mean it isn't a great solo. Lots of people can play Hendrix note for note as well. The hard part (or more accurately the part that required unique talent and innovation since it's not hard for the innovator) is creating that stuff in the first place.

I'm all for trash talking Van Halen but these guys are clueless about the nature of the rock industry at the time of Van Halen's first few albums. Van Halen was marketed on AOR; Album Oriented Radio. They weren't propelled by hit singles; they blew up because people loved the album. The first album was a success because people loved the album and the AOR FM rock stations were playing Runnin With The Devil and Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love etc; that's what sold the album so those really weren't flops. Back then a single was considered a hit or a flop based entirely on how many 45 rpm records of it were sold (little vinyl records with one song on each side). But rock fans didn't buy 45s; they bought albums. They also don't understand that the fact that Sabbath was a joke in 1978 is part of why VH exploded. Sabbath was burnt out, Zeppelin was running on fumes, the famous classic rock bands were flirting with disco; about the only heavy rock band around was Kiss, and Kiss was essentially a metal band for little kids. In that context Van Halen's debut was like manna from heaven.
