In this video I show one way to do your own laundry while living or camping in your van or RV. This method uses a portable 110V AC washing machine and a gasless Duracell 1440 Watt portable generator pack. I use my own onboard fresh water from my van and in 20 minutes I have clean clothes. The Maloo Rack is a great portable van or Jeep SUV drying rack. Malo'o (Mal-oh-oh) means "dry" in Hawaiian

What a fun old unit! Imagine, after all these years and it still works! After seeing comments, I think there are many ways to 'do laundry' while traveling in your van or RV. We always did the laundromat routine, which I hated but hubby loved. He loved the social aspect while I loved the peace and quiet. If I get to do what I want once he passes, I'll have a chance to decide how to do laundry for cheap. Thanks for the video!

Minimum resources besides a washer, hot water heater, 6 extra gallons of water, solar or generator to power.🙄 Just a bucket, a plunger with a few holes, water from a stream, and a $3 clothes line from Wal-Mart for those of us on a budget😁

But even if one doesn't have a battery system liken to this and washer too, can always do the old-fashioned find a stream or river, bring a washboard, wash ,hand ring out, have the old-fashioned clothes line (can add hooks to them so could be hung up around two trees near by your van/RV) and clothes pins too...save electric and battery and solar (in case too cloudy) and it's overall cheaper. This is what I do and for me it's more cost effective.🤗
@barbaraburke2937

@Baba Ganush if I do, they'll be biodegradable, like vinager, peroxide for major stains if any, and hang to dry...or something like real ivory soap, I never use harsh detergents (like Tide, and other certain name brands that have some harsh ingredients in them, because most of them I brake out with due to my skin sensitivity)...so I do most likely the old-fashioned version of laundry if I were out and about near a natural river stream, washboard, etc if not near a laundry mat. Right now, where I live until I get my newer van conversion started and done, I'm staying at my dad's caregiving for him in the midst of finally getting started this week on my newer van. And where I live too, is mostly desert and there's no river streams, lakes, etc. near by, unless I would drive at least 3-4 hours from here to even find one😊 to at least go swimming too😊

The retro machine is cool- do agree that the scrubba bag is what we use for such a small load.. The laundry mat is a source of water fill up for us though.. especially with a 4 1/2 month old.. small loads are often done - but getting all the sheets and stuff (if diaper over loads) needs to be done elsewhere.. Good video though

I absolutely love your washer and I have never seen one like that before. Though I forget how old I am, because I feel like I am40, I learned to cook on a big white wood burning stove and I did laundry with a wringer washer for several years. If you don't mind a few suggestions to make your washer work more efficient for you? After you drain the tub after your first wash, run the hose around the clothes for just a minute to loosen the soap. Then run the clothes through the wringer to squeeze the soap and water out. You will have much less soap contaminating the rinse water minimizing the amount of cycles you have to run to get your clothes clean and rinsed well. If the water coming off the clothes in the wringer is brown or grey, you would want to run the clothes through another wash cycle. When you run the clothes through the wringer, shake each item out and run each item through as a single layer or (if too wide, fold them in half, thirds, quarters, whatever it takes) to make sure the clothes go through the wringer evenly. If they go through wadded up, much of the water is not squeezed out of the item because the hem or sleeve or whatever part of the item that is loose and doesn't get squeezed much will take the water in that otherwise would have been squeezed , putting the soap or dirty water back in the tub or taking longer to dry. And in my younger days it would have made the heavy sleeve or hem or...misshapened and stretched out. When I would wash my younger brothers pants after playing baseball and sliding into base, or playing football and tackling each other or working out in the mud, I might have run that load through3-4 washes before the water ran clean and the same with the rinse water if you added too much soap. I was surprised by how far the soap you added went when you could not have added more than a teaspoon, if that. As much work as a wringer washer might sound, they were so much easier and enjoyable than a washboard. Funny how things change! Now I have a tall set of an electric washer and dryer that open in front, will boil my sheets and towels, wash lace better than I can by hand and sing to me when they finish instead of buzz. I hope this was helpful and was not already covered. Great video (as always!). Thanks!

Neat old washer. I had no idea such devices were made back then. One point, a "generator" creates power from using fuel with a motor. A battery pack, like this Duracell unit, supplies stored power, after being charged by.... a generator (or solar). They really are two different things. Proper terminology is important.

Great video!!!! My grandmother had a washer machine with a ringer, she used to use it before the rinse cycle. There might be less bubbles in your rinse water. Her’s was electric and I used to get my fingers caught in between the rollers.☺️

OR You could just hand wash that amount of clothes, soak overnight in a bucket of soapy water (1st wash) rub etc then rinse out, string a rope between two trees and hang it up to dry.

You also have to bear in mind it is if you divide your van and you in the wilderness.. and it rains for 2-3 days you can't recharge the power the power is gone for good until the sun comes out I want you to drive somewhere.. I say again the best way to wash your clothes by hand that's the quickest way that machine's not a quick way is it good but it's not a quick way it's for the lazy person that don't have to wash clothes..

Remember they called that thing with the rollers a "Mangle" for a reason. But with a hand crank your pretty safe.
