Hi Christian: I live in NZ, a place I gather you have visited to snowboard at - although I hope you got to see more of the country! I discovered your channel yesterday, as I hunkered down at home while we 'enjoy' 120km/hr+ winds as we get clipped by a tropical storm. I am retired now, and for the past 18 months have been living on my own since my wife died. I consider myself to be a citizen of the world - four passports, and a wanderlust that has never been tamed. Many years ago (mostly the 1980's), I did most of my travelling over several years - going around the world - working as an engineer but also taking stock images to help me pay my way - and beginning a lifetime commitment to photography. I SO relate to your desire to be in nature, away from the pressures of city life, and I am also a bit of a loner: perhaps more so as I have got older. Over the years, I have tramped (you call it hiking) most of NZ and love its diversity. However, I miss the grand vistas of North America and the macro mammals: like bears, moose, wolves etc. that NZ does not have. I had a bucket list of places I wanted to visit: South Georgia + Antarctica, the Galapagos, the Masa Mara, and spend more time in North America enjoying the amazing national parks of the USA and Canada. COVID has dealt that a major blow: NZ was very isolated to protect our population, in fact in the latter part of 2021 I spent 15 weeks in a bubble of one as Auckland city went into lockdown. I hope one day to be able to so some of those trips, but at almost 70, getting travel insurance with COVID variants around is not going to be guaranteed or cheap. In the meantime, viewing your channel has given me a vicarious pleasure in enjoying your experiences, honesty, intelligence and philosophy. You have my sincere thanks for that! You asked about books: perhaps I can recommend books on the life of Lee Miller: a woman I can relate to as her life spanned many places, skills and challenges. I am reading one currently: The Art of Lee Miller right. She was a pioneering 'new woman' in the early 20th century who would not be defined by male values. She was considered what would later called a supermodel, but wanted to be on the other side of the camera, and she mastered the big view cameras and plate-processing of the day; and did fashion, portraiture, surrealist art (and was Man Ray's muse and co-creator). In WWII, she even became a combat photographer and eloquent journalist for Vogue UK: defying the military, to stay with the front line as Europe was liberated. She photographed the concentration camps and famously, on the day he killed himself, made a photo of herself cleaning off the filth of Dachau in the bathtub of Hitler's apartment , with her combat boots defiling Hitler's pristine bathmat . Sadly, she suffered massive PTSD post war, and gave up photography, but reinvented herself a master-chef, creating surrealist-themed meals until her death in 1977. She is an inspiration and I recognize in your a similar intelligence, multi-talent, and a restlessness.

Here's what's cool. I was watching this video and noted the shot you took at what appears to be Schwabacher's (sp?) landing. If it's the way I think, I grabbed that very same shot, at the same time (6:03). It was epic the way the clouds were hovering below the peaks, but above the river and the back small lake at the landing, giving the awesome unique reflection. A once in a lifetime. Cooler still is when you are talking about you guys re grouping...and shooting that shot across that field out of the van in the national forest, I recognize the road and then the subsequent road you are walking upon while talking about your nap. I stayed in or near that very spot while there. I guess it's just fun seeing the exact same places I was from inside another video...and likely we were like...right there at the same time. :-) Small world. Very, very small world indeed.

Hiya Christian! Loving the colors in the intro! I always enjoy watching the pets in these vids. That pup looked like they had a lot of personality. :-) The reinforcement plate(s) idea sounds prudent, and I am sure you likely got them. Good thing that Prime Day is coming -- auto parts tend to be cheaper, and mirror assemblies don't cost a whole lot. I wonder if for the hot days and nights, a makeshift "swamp cooler" would come in handy, for the times you're stationary? It's something that I make and use for when I'm headed down south for my long-range van trips to Alabama/Georgia/Louisiana/Texas. I could use the A/C in my rig, but I try to conserve energy, and I found that it works wonders. BTW: We always enjoy your endings, but it was nice to see the night sky. Happy Trails! :-)

There are those not-so-warm-and-fuzzy moments living the van life. Just like on the backpacking trips, the ones you've planned and prepared for, things just don't seem to gel or go right. You deal with it and move on. I've done month long adventures and you cannot anticipate breakdowns. Once in Kentucky my vehicle sat in a friend's driveway for three weeks while I waited for a part that had to be shipped from Italy, leaving me to rent a vehicle for my vacation. That sucked! That left me one week to return to my base in Arizona.

Big fan of your videos, keep them coming! I have a suggestion to help a little with your mirrors. I got a mirror cam from Amazon last year (around $80) and it's been really great. The small camera mounts on the back of your van inside or outside with a wide angle lense so you can see cars in your blindspots at the corners. It's like looking at a tv with a view of what's behind your van and not through your van like a traditional mirror. With a big enough flash card, it will record what's in front (another camera mounted in front of the mirror) and back. Only issue is it wouldn't help with cars that are right beside you past the blind spots. Hope you can get your mirrors fixed. 🤞

@@ChristianSchaffer Did a quick forum search on your issue and it seems people are saying more often than not, the mechanical internals of the mirror are faulty. The best parts of this video were the dogs and the songs you chose for the background, really nice. The question I have, which perhaps it’s just me - and I don’t understand is - if a person lives on the road/van life - and gets a GF or a BF - then how does it work if you “meet up” with other travellers and you are in a relationship? I can’t tell in this video if the 2 make friends you went camping with, the sleeping arrangements etc. How does a couple who are dating go on dates? Plan for the future? Sounds nosy I know, but I can’t be the only one who wonders about this. PS I live in Canada and while this lifestyle looks great, I spend about 4 months of the year where it’s -15C so I can’t swing this.

Another beautiful video !! You seemed a little stressed, sounds like you got a lot going on ! But I also sense you’re able to find peace pretty quickly. There’s nothing like being in nature to help you do that :-)

So captivated by the outdoor shots - particularly from 3:48-3:55. It almost looks fake it's so breathtaking. I've been curious about your friend Nate who appears in a number of your videos. Does he do what you do, nature photography, and therefore you collaborate on projects? Watching you fix your mirrors reminded me of a van life couple I follow where the husband said as he was repairing something that had broken down in the van, 'if you want to choose van life you better like to fix things'.

So many beautiful views out there in Wyoming. It was honestly hard to leave! Nate is also an outdoor photographer and has a built-out Sequoia - he posts over on @nathanielwise ☺️🙌🏼
