There is no rock artist who can say more with just rhythm and sound than can Van, IMHO. Looking at his lyrics on the page, they often look like nothing. But, oh my, when he has a band chugging along behind him, he is sublime. Funky and ecstatic at the same time. Neat trick that few can pull off. When the band hits, that is what is all about. Van is often a surly performer, but when he is "on" there is no one like him.

I would imagine van is the envy of his peers, he has total control over the sound but is gracious enough to allow the musicians he is working with to add their own embellishments. Not every artist has an ego loose enough to allow this and it works because he hires the best in the business. But the genius of Van will studied in centuries to come.

I had the pleasure of taking classes from Nathan Rubin (the violinist featured here in this Van Morrison performance beginning at the 4:33 mark) while I was a music major at Cal State Hayward in the mid 1970's. Professor Rubin was so wonderfully eclectic. As a virtuoso violinist and in his teaching, Nathan embodied genre equity - validating and elevating the status of popular music genres and respective musicians within the established European/American Classical tradition of study.
