I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for The Band, but I wouldn’t say that they were one of my personal favorites. And yet, The Last Waltz has always had a special place in my heart. I found it hard to explain until fairly recently, when I came to realize that the concert itself took place on the night of my birth! As this version of The Band was leaving the world, I was entering… good for me, though the rest of the world might feel that they got the short end of that particular trade… oh well

OG mic drop?

@stevemuscarella8286 4 ай бұрын
@@dice1296 I've wondered often if THIS moment, in 1976, is the original mic drop. Not just destroying the mic like a Sex Pistols's Jonny Rotten, but as a punctuation and statement of pride and even a little arrogance. And who better then Van Morrison at the end of an incredibly powerful performance to say "Thank you" and then just let the mic drop. He's bent over, so it's not a long drop but the attitude of "And THAT'S how it's done, folks...." Bam.

My favourite from the movie is the Band performing with the Staples. It's well worth a deep dive as the members of The Band trade verses with one of the great gospel / soul groups. So much to explore in the vocal styles.

I have to say, I'm a Van Morrison tribute artist, huge fan. your analysis passion is spot on. You are one of the few people I've ever seen that really knows what's going on inside both the song and the artist in his delivery. Van stole the show in this film and your deep dive can help others find the explanation why. Ultimately all that technical freedom is helping him be an extraordinary communicator. Thank you very much and I think I shall be a fan of yours now too. Bravo❤

I lived on the San Francisco peninsula from 1967-77 and this was the last concert I saw at Winterland. They opened the doors at 5:00 pm and it ended well after 2:00 am. I had seen the Band years earlier, and Van Morrison several times, but this show which also featured Dylan, Clapton, Neil Young, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr and many other guest performers was epic.

THIS is the classic performance of 'The Band's' "The Last Waltz" movie. Bethany, you could create an entire program analyzing the great vocals that took place through the course of that wonderful movie. This is classic Rock & Roll at it's best from some of the best performers of the era....all backed by "The Band".

"Brown Eyed Girl," "Why Must I Always Explain?", "Wavelength," "Tupelo Honey," "Listen to The Lion," "Someone Like You," "Days Like This," and "In The Garden",'Moondance', are all Van Morrison songs that are outstanding. You really can't make a list of songs that can explain his talent. He's a musical genius, singer, and poet. His music has been described as attaining a spiritual feeling beyond or above the range of typical experiences. A transcendence feeling of experiencing the music through his lyrics and voice. Other songs like Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile), Full Force Gale, Domino, Cypress Avenue, Queen Of The Slipstream, and Dweller On The Threshold are good examples. It's a deep rabbit hole to go down - but, believe me, it's well worth it.

One of my favorites of his "songs" is "Coney Island". He doesn't sing, he just describes a day trip around Ireland. Just like I've done many times. Not to be too sappy, but it sings to my Celtic soul. The craic is definitely good when I hear it.

One of the finest performances ever filmed. So many factors combined to make it great. Van really responded to performing with The Band and vice versa, also both parties had really responded to the special setting that was the Last Waltz. So many peers present on stage, back stage and in the audience. As well as the audience that was to come once the film was out. They were performing for more than just the people in the building.

I saw Van Morrison in 1971 at The Lions Share, a small club in San Anselmo, in Marin County, north of San Francisco. He played many shows in the Bay Area around that time, and he always had excellent musicians in his band. What made this show so great was that we got to see him and his band up close. It was a great time to live in the Bay Area, when San Francisco was a Rock and Roll Mecca.
