Van Morrison's voice is genius and he uses it to take this song to another level!! The song itself is about life and sailing into the unknown that comes after. Everything in the lyrics has a double meaning "And the bonny boat was won/one" "and when that foghorn whistle blows, I want to hear it, I don't have to fear it!" This song was his masterpiece!!

YES !!! And, strings - low strings, like a cello - to simulate a foghorn. I always wondered whether there was some horn mixed in - a trombone or a bari sax, maybe even a tuba - but really i don't think so. I think he achieved his purpose with just those low strings. Really clever, though. I was in Seal Beach, one day, on the beach, looking for a girl i'd met - thickest fog i've ever seen. 'Literally could not see my hand in front of my face. And i remember the foghorn blowing. I never found her again. Her name was Sean. But i love this song, and it always makes me think of that experience.

The album this song is on, Moondance, is one of my favs of all time. So smooth. I got to see him once at Memphis in May in 96. My mom and her girlfriends went also. I was bragging to her that I was 20 feet away from the stage. She said, "Hell, i got to meet him". He is notoriously a private individual. They were staying at the Peabody where Van was (he rented out an entire floor) The day he was checking out, they went to go find him. He was walking down the hall and they tried to speak with him and he ignored them. They would not take no for an answer, chased him down, and got his autograph on his new book her friend had bought. Always tryin to out do me Mom! Love you!

In 2016 Van released a box set with recordings of multiple shows from the tour which gives an appreciation for how they performed the songs differently on different nights.

Counter assumption (cause I don't really know) I thought the "fog horn" was playing the deepest bass notes on a Hammond b-3 ( the guys usually refer to it as the church organ) . My $.02 .

The only thing about the foghorn sound is that no musician on the song is credited with playing a cello, stand-up bass, organ or vibraphone. So that leaves us with sax.

"Into the Mystic" is from Van Morrison's 1970 album, Moondance, an album that ranks high among the very best of the 20th century -- "And It Stoned Me", "Moondance", "Crazy Love", "Caravan", "Into the Mystic", "Come Running", "These Dreams of You", "Brand New Day", "Everyone", "Glad Tidings" -- Morrison swings in some way on every song, like drifting down a lazy river on a warm sunny day, a hot bowl of soup at home after months at sea, a couple dancing in the moonlight. Every track on that album is worth a reaction.
