When you feel music like this, you're really understanding the universal language of music. Van the Man is not for everyone but you guys saying "a warm blanket wrapped around you on a cold day" is 100% spot on. His music is beyond genre, it's completely feel and emotions. Great review as always gentlemen, thank you.

I love Van Morrison. He's such a great storyteller and he's an intelligent man of deep feeling. I'm so glad he's still around (he just turned 79 less than a month ago). He and Boz Scaggs are two of the soulful greats who will perform until their last breath.

There’s a reason he’s called Van the Man. Great voice, a true songwriter/storyteller, who always surrounds himself with fine musicians playing tasty licks

Astral Weeks is a fantastic record, that I think Van showed up with the songs and the jazz guys knocked it out in a day or two. It is a vague concept album and the songs are related. But Sweet Thing is a good place to start. At one point Rolling Stone had it as a top ten all time album

Good rection as always. I've been a Van fan for 50 years or so. At a Jeff Beck concert, my daughter and I met a guy who was a huge Van fan and talked about all the times he had seen him in concert. He told us that Van was doing a residency in Vegas and, long story short, my wife and I flew to Vegas to finally get to see him perform. What a concert! Sonically, it was the best concert I ever attended, and I've been to well over 100. You could clearly here EVERYTHING on stage, from the lightest percussion. Van was half of the horn section, and his pianist doubled as the other half! Great band!

I'm sure I've made a variation of this point but if you're reading this, La and Che, I beg you to check out some of his real deep stuff, the Ur-Van of the semi-improvised studio epics. You are only the only reactors I take completely seriously. No unnecessary interruptions for banal observations, an understanding of production, writing, arrangements and harmony - no one else does it as well and your respect and love for each other is a pleasure to observe. Enough flattery 😊 and back to Van: The ones that really transport me most are Summertime in England from 1980 and You Don't Pull No Punches But You Don't Push the River from what i consder to be his masterpiece, 1974's Veedon Fleece album (sorry, Astral Weeks absolutists!). However, even on his patchy debut, he gave us the deeply unsettling yet thrillingly urgent 10 min blues, T.B. Sheets. The other really deep cuts where he loses himself completely and the bands do incredible things to not just keep up with, but complement and react to him perfectly (and this is by no means a complete list), are Listen to the Lion and Almost Independence Day from '72, Autumn Song and Purple Heather from '73; pretty much all the longer Veedon Feece songs (the short ones are fire too), the live 1973 version of Cypress Avenue from the much-lauded It's Too Late to Stop Now double album; When the Healing Has Begun and It's All in the Game/You Know What They're Writing About from '79, the aforementioned Summertime in England from Common One (an album almost universally panned by critics at the time but I fucking love it) and quite a few more on future albums, songs such as In The Days Before Rock'n' Roll, and Take Me Back. Apologies for the lengthy comment but Morrison is one of a very few singers who reach me so deeply, at least in his first 40 years performing. How such a legendarily rude and cantankerous man is responsible for some of the most uplifting, soul- enriching music is one of life's great mysteries. Anyway, if anybody got this far, please investigate my recommendations - you won't be disappointed! P.S. Did you ever check him out singing Caravan on the film of the Band's Last Waltz? Has to be seen and heard x

I started my journey with Astral Weeks, but you're right Veedon Fleece is sublime. You've also checked a few more of my fav's like Days Before Rock & Roll (Poet Paul Durkin is perfect on this). Still, you've given me a few more to check out!

@germcdunphy4566 if you read it again, I mentioned Days Before... It's a gem of a song. I hope you like the others I recommended. Another one, not quite as epic, that really gets to me is Vanlose Stairway. There's a great live take on the live at Belfast Opera House album. The slow ballads from The Chieftains collaboration album also come close to the transcendental x

Not saying you should do a reaction to this, but his first solo album Astral Weeks is a true gem of an album just to listen too. Recorded in around 10 days, Van the Man asked the rest of the musicians just kinda feel where he was going. And see what worked and what didn't. Probably about as spontaneous an album could be.

@fredshred5194 1967 or early '68. It was recorded for the Bang label. Van doesn't rate it but there are a few good ones on it. Jerry Garcia recorded a version of He Ain't Give You None. The album has come out under a few titles over the years, some including several gibberish songs Van recorded atvthe same time to get out of his contract

I don't want to be that commentor but I will for this one. This is my favorite Van Morrison song and I am as big of a Van Morrison geek as you will find but this version sucks. The studio version and the versions with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra have so much flow and feel to them while this version is so herky-jerky and lethargic. First off this song doesn't work without keyboards and you need the horns to be way more prominent than they are here. Also you need more than one backup singer, in fact the more backup vocalists you have the better song gets. Finally, laid back Van doesn't work for this song. You need more involved Van shifting his weight as he sings to give the vocals more oomph and to give that end part a more staccato like punch to the song. This feels like someone trying to do a folk version of an R&B song and it just doesn't work. (Imagine Bob Dylan trying to do a Sam and Dave song) One of the things I like about Van Morrison is that he is never afraid to take chances and try things outside the box. That can be a double edged sword though because sometimes those chances are awful miscalculations and this version is one of those. Either listen to the album version or the live version off of It's Too Late To Stop Now (my choice for best live album ever made and my favorite album of all time and I have over a thousand albums in my music collection.) to get the best out of this song.
