Van Tour: DIY conversion with a stealth van (FAST and INEXPENSIVE)

This video is a van tour of a do it yourself (DIY) van conversion of a minivan into a camper. The video will give good ideas how to convert any van into a camper. With this example, you’ll see that you can do a great DIY conversion even with a minivan!
It shows that anybody can do a great conversion and a great camper without spending too much money!
You’ll see that you can do a van conversion without modifying the van, so you won’t deteriorate the salvage value when you’ll sell it. Foremost, you’ll be able to transfer every pieces of van conversion that you will have built into a similar new van! You’ll save a lot of time and money with such a transferable design.
Also, this example will show you that you can do a great van conversion with just a few tools!
The objective of the video is to encourage and stimulate you to realize your dream of van conversion and go live in the great outdoors!
This video is the first of a series that will explain how to proceed to convert a van by doing it yourself (DIY).

Erik, I've watched a lot of van conversion videos. I mean a LOT of videos. This is the first one that talked about "transferability" and not altering your vehicle. This is an amazing idea! I am starting to see a few conversions that are maintaining the original structure and integrity of the van. Mostly the conversion like that are being done by engineers, builders and carpenters. All very experienced and skilled, male and younger than I. Lol. I am young, relatively healthy 70 year old woman. I am excellent with figuring out sizes and dimensions, have built a few shaker style pieces years ago, but I really like this conversion because items are lightweight and easily retrofitted if needed.

Lots of people do "modification free" conversions, but they NEVER look this good. This looks like a custom build, usually what is associated with modification of the vehicle. Not to mention lots of work and cost - this is like the best of both worlds. It's incredible.

I have just purchased my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica mini van and all seats stow and go. But of course overwhelmed with possibilities. I am 68 year old woman and want to be able to do something simple. And how you explain is very easy to understand and to replicate. I have some experience with tools and love that you can do this conversion with just 2 power tools. Sorry to disagree, and not to be disagreeable. I am fluent in 2 langusges, one of which is French. The accent is heavy and distracting. Good effort, though. His vocabulary and grammar are excellent. This is a really smart conversion. I like just having storage on one side with sink. With sink accessible from both outside and inside. Would this setup fit in another model van or is it specific. Does the setup make noise as you drive?

I made your bed and cabinet for my own Sienna and it came out pretty well. Getting those contours right was tedious and time consuming, but worth it. Mine's a bit of a tighter fit than yours and so far I haven't noticed rattling, or need to secure it. I even sewed my own box cushion covers and I'm a dude who didn't sew until a few days ago. Trying to convert the back bench seat into bed for my son to simplify traveling, diapering and intrusion on others (he's really happy/loud, developmentally disabled). Exactly the inspiration I was looking for. A commercial van with a high roof seems nice for a mobile home and a « cheap » RV, but is still way too expensive. Siennas and Odyssey are hyper reliable and Dodge Grand Caravans are such a bargain, I always wonder why more vanlifers don’t have your (even more) minimalist approach. Good job. You gentlemen are right on the money, I think. I started with a Grand Caravan - just as you suggested - and I picked up it for $500. I learned a LOT from experimenting with my first 2 builds. I'm now working on a conversion of the Sienna's sibling, a 2007 Highlander - similar in size, but with more ground clearance and available as a hybrid

Actually, you can get a high quality Toyota SUV for less then $6k! The better years are 2000-2005 anyway, sochesper to get! I have my eye on a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner for $5k with less than 150k miles on it. Im just trying to figure out of the Sienna or the 4 Runner is best...Sienna looks like it has more room for some resson

A minivan as certainly more living height inside. If you want to seat at a table, it is an important aspect to consider... I had an Xterra for 5 years and enjoyed it a lot, traveling and sleeping anywhere. But my minivan as way more inside space than that SUV. Before buying, it is best to figure out the layout that you can do in both of them. That way you will take the best decision to fit your dream! Enjoy planning your van conversion Ash✌️

My wife and I own a 2008 AWD limited Sienna that is about to face the conversion to stealth camper van. I am starting from the roof down , buying the longest tule bars they sell for the two 100 watt solar panels. Most likely an overkill but being retired we plan on extended boon docking with two 200 amp batteries in parallel . At this point the rest of our build will closely resemble yours. My good sir I have some questions because I intend to buy a Toyota Sienna to convert myself. When you installed your solar setup, do the wires come from the trunk door? Does it leak any? And regarding your compressor fridge, how much energy does it consume from your solar panels?

Yes from the trunk. Drilled no hole. It does not leak at all. The cables follow the inside of the frame of the entry to the trunk, and cross inside at the bumper level. Look at the last frame of the video and you’ll see the cable on the left hand side. Hey Eric!! Well I found your video and am amazed!! A run down on me.. I was homeless for 4.5 years.. gave me a taste of freedom I cant describe. I lost my husband in Jan 2018 and moved in with a friend, and got a job, and now.. Hola Eric! I write this note to you as we are on month 3 of travels from Florida, to western US then Vancouver across Canada and at the moment we are in Montreal. We did a similar build based on your design, keeping the cabinet with the sink but not building the larger cabinet in favor of an open flex space. We also use a Jackery for battery needs and a rechargeable sink pump for the faucet. You are so correct in this design!!! We have cooked meals inside on rainy days and slept many nights in busy areas but we’re so stealth that nobody knows we are there. The foldable table has saved us many times for food prep and service. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your inspiration! We could not have done it without this idea you’ve shared.

I’m back to rewatch this again! Modifying this bed to keep access to leave out the back of the van is definitely not going to give me the storage I need. I did a test run with a cot . Even though I had so little stuff with me it was cluttered. Excellent eye opener and reminder why I thought this was such a great design to begin with!

With my bed, you still have place to put one or two drawers side by side for your outside kitchen. The assembly panel is not at the height of the bumper. I like to see you thinking and planning your van. 👍

The absolute BEST Minivan conversion I have ever seen!!!! I have been considering a Toyota Sienna as a conversion and your video has convinced me this is the way to go. I have a 2000 Camry with 221,000 miles, bought it brand new and have nothing but praise for the performance of my vehicle. Have never had to replace anything but the usual like tires, brakes, etc, and of course timing belt twice as per proper maintenance. Toyota makes the best vehicle available! Please make another video with a break down of the type and size of your solar panel and battery, and maybe a little more detail about how you installed the inverter and connected it to the solar panel and battery. I know you said you didn't put any bolts or alterations onto the vehicle so I'm curious how you connected the solar output to the inverter which is inside the vehicle ... Would also like to know the brand of solar shower. Perhaps you could make some "extra" cash if you could get the companies to give you a little "kick back" for mentioning their products. I would really find that helpful to know the brands you have chosen. I know other people sharing their videos list the product name and companies and get a kick back when someone from your site clicks on and purchases from a link on your site that connects to the companies site. Unless you are independently wealthy, this may be a way to help support your travels. Thank you sooo much for sharing! You did such a nice job and filled me with inspiration!! Some products like ARB are often willing to pay you X amount to just mention them and how great they are in your vids. The Amazon Store would be another outlet to sell your Sienna Buildout Plans. The employees at the Affiliate range are so helpful. 😀 You can eat free at pre-arranged restaurants due to your opinion is valued because you have a following. And then get a Instagram. Here is one example of a Toyota Sienna build: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGeun314ZtJpetU Just ask him if he has any plans he can send you. In a campervan you are obligated to own tools and know how to fix things. Its necessary for travel because unlike a car, no one knows how it works, so you are on your own for repairs. Its simple. Get a jig saw, drill, driver, and start. Get a circular saw or table saw to rip wood. Even if you don't own a single tool, start researching each tool, buy it, use it, and become an expert at it. After all, you had to learn to walk didn't you? Could not pay someone to walk for you.

I drove a taxi for several years. My company had all the different minivans from all the different manufacturers. The Toyota Sienna was far and away the most reliable minivan made. Hands down. The Honda Odyssey was a distant second. if you change the oil as recommended by the manufacturer, the motor and transmission can last five hundred thousand miles and more.
