In our last minute preparations to leave for Europe we make a big mistake that might cost us a lot of time and money but we try to see the positive side to it! We have just two days to get everything sorted and ready to go on our big trip into Europe!
Who are we? 💁🏼‍♀️
We're Tom and Iz, who live and travel in our van La Bamba. We've spent the last 7 months exploring Scotland, Ireland and some of Wales. We've been in our home county Cornwall for a few weeks and now we are getting the van ready to head into Europe for a big road trip with no end date and no real plan! You might find Tom in the forest IDing a mushroom, fixing something or starting a wild project whereas you could find Isabel sunning herself on a beach, running around coming up with different ideas or cooking up a storm. Tom is calm and methodical in his approach, whilst Isabel has endless enthusiasm, positivity and frantic energy. We are total opposites but it works!

How did we end up here?! 😁 ⏮
We met 10 years ago when we were both finishing our A-levels and had a whirlwind summer romance, hitch-hiking around France together before before going our separate ways to travel and to university. Little did we know we just weren't going to get each other out of our minds!
We've both always prioritised travel and adventure and have worked hard over the years in hospitality jobs to enable us to keep exploring. Tom hitch-hiked across Europe and road tripped around Australia whilst Iz studied Environmental Science at York. Iz backpacked around South America with her sister whilst Tom studied Forestry at Aberdeen University. Fast forward 4 years later and we found ourselves still thinking of each other and both back in Cornwall. We thought life is too short to wonder what if and moved to Cambridge together whilst Iz tried her hand at a graduate job and Tom worked in a cafe. It didn't take us long to realise that we didn't suit the 9-5 and yearned for something more active and outdoors where we could spend more time together.
We got ourselves a campsite warden jobs on an eco-campsite in Scotland and lived in a bell tent in a wild flower meadow for 6 months. This really solidified our want to live outdoors as much as possible amongst nature! Then the summer drew to a close and feeling a bit lost as to what to do, we decided to train to be secondary science teachers. Whilst we were training to teach (and not enjoying it), we bought out van very spontaneously; it represented freedom and escapism! We made it our mission to convert the van, move in to it, and travel so we could live more simply and more freely.
Since then Iz managed to get a remote work-from-home job that she could do from the van and Tom was passionate about starting up a KZbin channel. Now we are giving it our best shot to do KZbin full time. We have a dream of one day owning a little plot of land and building ourselves a cabin in the woods. We are living and traveling in our van and are thoroughly enjoying making vlogs and bringing you along with us! Wayyyhayyyyy! Next adventure! I have been using a Mac Mini for the last 10 years and it is great. Reliable and hard working. One good tip if it does do something weird is look up the PRAM restart (turn off the machine at the off button, start the machine and hold down the 'Command' 'Option' 'P and 'R' button until you hear the second startup sound and then let go). In the ten years I have only had to do this once or twice because I did something Geoff-like to it. Looking forward to France :)

Definitely a good idea to do a full oil change. Every 6-8K is a good mileage. It keeps the engine so much better, stops problems developing. In fact, it's worth doing air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, all in one go, if you haven't had a service in a while, for doing such a large road trip. They're quick easy jobs you can save a bit of money doing yourself, and you've done so much driving the past year.

I agree with an earlier commenter, don't put pressure on yourselves providing us with daily vlogs. Excellent vid again guys, The van is like the Tardis you can't believe how much stuff you can get in. One tip about the computer make sure it is well vented as it will run very hot when you are editing videos and needs a lot of cold air.

The new Mac m1 chips are pretty good heat wise, plus we have actually reduced our power usage from the old lap top which is a bonus. When the table is up, ie when the computer is in use I would think the air flow should be good. Cheers for the heads up though :)

Don't worry about feeling daft filling up with too much oil, I know someone who thought you had to top up the oil by pouring it in where the dipstick is lol. Dipstick seems the appropriate word, and No!! it wasn't me. Regarding your old laptop, have you thought of running Linux on it. I have an old laptop for church that was really slow and put Linux Mint on it and it is flying. I guess it all depends on what you want to do on it and what software you are use to. May as well change the air filter if you haven't done it already. Also if you van has a cabin filter. There very cheap and it makes a difference.

How did you go about doing your gas hob setup? Conversion guides say you need it in a vented gas locker but I’ve seen many vanlifers including you guys who just have it under their sink. Is it okay to do that? And where do you get the refillable gas bottles / kit? Thanks:)

Yeah we have it under the sink, it’s apparently dangerous without venting as it produces harmful chemicals. Our whole van feels pretty breezy so hopefully we are loosing lots of them chemicals anyway. We use campingaz canisters, they are more expensive but they are available throughout Europe so is a good trade off for us. You can find stores by googling “campingaz store locator” although it’s not 100% accurate. In terms of instal we just slapped a gas hob in there with a little campingaz regulator, and you need to swap out the sphincters on the hob for smaller ones as the propane/butane burns stronger than the mains.

We're heading across a continent. Maybe we should check the oil and windscreen washer fluid eh? Perhaps give the tyres a bit of a kick too. Oh and I must remember and put clean clothes on before a doing some rust removal and oil changesl on our van :-) Top tip. Full fat Coke is good for cleaning metal. Ketchup is a bit messy.

We have 200Ah li iron batteries and the solar is backed up with a battery to battery charger when we drive, works a treat. The new Mac actually is more powerful and uses less power than me old laptop which is nice

I hope ye don't come to a point where it's a slog to put up videos daily, a day driving in the sun can already make a person tired, nevermind videography and editing on top of that, aswell as planning the route, unforeseen issues and basic time to wash, cook , eat etc
