I saw many Subaru conversions but I would like to ask if anyone ever tried BMW e36/e46 engine 4 cyl petrol? I know those engines are very good and can last very long time

I'm happy folks flush with cash are doing these conversions, as I was able to get two stock motors being discarded that work fine, one 1.9 and the other 2.1, with plenty of associated spare parts. Since I had a Westfalia with a fatally damaged engine that someone else abused, this meant I was able to do a conversion to stock at no cost. If I had the means, I'd go with finding the diesel Subaru at a wrecker, get the minimum of needed conversion parts, fabricate the rest and do the install. The 2.1 was near new, as the vanagon it was in burned to the ground from an engine fire caused by the installing mechanic forgetting to tighten fuel line clamps, right after the customer picked it up.

That's awesome to hear. It sounds like you are close to having the van of your dreams.

Thanks for the kind words. The Westfalia is a kind of interesting side project as the main van is a 1985 Ford E250 diesel with a 1993 engine and GearVendors overdrive, which we travel cross country in, can tow a car trailer and run on biodiesel and vegetable oil.

Your insights are much appreciated. I'm coming to the conclusion that for gasoline, the Zetec engine is likely the most reliable and easiest. However I would probably want to fabricate everything but their adapter plate and flywheel and they don't sell that way, so apart from the engine it's pricey, even if we don't have California issues.

The Subaru Diesel, look up the issues with that motor. Is one of the most problematic diesels in the world.

Thanks Jeff , ive been noticing some pretty good deals on used Rabbit Convertibles on Craigslist and Ebay lots of the cars I've seen are in need of a new top Or aren't in top paint condition ? It was my understanding in the past that those cars had the same running gear as the GTI models ? Therefore I was curious if that is a good motor for the swap as well i did not keep up with every thing Volkswagen did with all the watercooled vehicles although i was a fan and owner of many of the first generation varieties like the old Rabbits, Dashers, and Scirroccos ! Plus my daughter drives a fairly new Jetta and a freind had a turbo Beetle i glanced at a few times

You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. As far as the possible donor vehicles for engines, I have seen some of those engines used as swaps. If you want to locate additional information do a search of KZbin. For example Vanagon GTI engine swap, you can find nearly any engine coversion you can imagine on there.. I think the most important considerations should be reliability, horsepower(I wouldn't do less than 135hp) and cost benefit. Also a big question is what is long-term track record of that engine in the Vanagon, I would seek out this information the most. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching have a great evening.

Great information. Your smart to have the paypal. KZbin just changed its rules. Unless we have 1000 subscribers, we can’t get any advertising money. I am also interested in the conversion to a Subaru wrx engine conversion also. Also a video on whether you really need a Syncro would be good. I still haven’t gotten my Vanagon yet but I always see people selling their Vanagon because they bought a Syncro and it makes wonder. Wait to buy a Vanagon or wait to buy a Syncro. Also is the conversion to Syncro just as good?
