Since the Syncro parts are so rare that you need to buy a Syncro van to rip out the part and do the conversion … Then you ask yourself why spent $25k-50k to convert? At the end of the day you have worn out 40 years old van which is unreliable, and if your Syncro part break in the middle of nowhere, it’s almost impossible to get parts!!!

I saw many Subaru conversions but I would like to ask if anyone ever tried BMW e36/e46 engine 4 cyl petrol? I know those engines are very good and can last very long time

@1:21 It is a former mountain petrol Westfalia conversion Vanagon. @3:14 This is already converted with a beefy Audi S6 engine.

Your rear brakes should only do between 20-30% of the braking work while the front do 70-80% of the work.

@Outlaw912: Dealing with CARB (California Air Resources Board) & their referees for an inspection can be a potentially nightmarish decision; There are SVX Vanagons that have successfully received the CARB sticker & passed inspection, but if you want to do that SVX conversion in California? I don't know their changes in this current "Post-CV" era, maybe it's easier, but it may be more fruitful, time & cost effective to pursue other alternative strategies to get the result you want... Slightly off-topic, I don't have one (with SVX), but I've seen multiple ads from owners who sold their SVX Vanagons mated to their Vanagon automatic transmissions, and the consensus seems to show that the automatic Vanagon transmissions have a harder time handling the SVX torque long term vs the manuals...

The head gasket issue was solved with better alloys in the head manufacturing. Modern alloys are much better than 30 years ago.

@@jeffsharesstuff9651 Jeff I live in East Tennessee between Chattanooga and Knoxville about five miles from North Carolina. I haven’t found anyone. Who wants to work on Vanagons up here at all. I’m not really looking for a Subie swap because I hear the mileage can be pretty bad and wear and tear on the VW manual trans and half shafts is pretty severe.

@@kimhorton6109 check out Gregoire S. Blachon on KZbin he does Vanagon Subaru diesel conversions and I believe he is located in Tennessee. I believe he also sells conversion kits or parts. As to needing to modify the Vanagon transmission to accommodate the engine, I believe if you go with the 4 cylinder Subaru engine that is rated around I believe 140hp there is no transmission modification needed. 140hp may not sound like much but in a rear engine rear wheel drive it does quite well. Hope this information helps you.☺

Stretch the wheelbase to push the drive axle back about 24”. Utilize a Silverado diff and brakes onto a floating cradle that carries rear end, trans, Duramax. Requires a subframe and short dog house. Radiator and fans over front bumper. Gains storage deck over extended rear, and towing capacity. Add-on 4x4 no problem.

I would estimate around 20,000 miles. Very reliable no issues of any kind to report with the engine or transmission. Very pleased with the Subaru engine. Thank you for watching and for the question.
