Can you do a follow until video with your Dad and ask him what he would do if he had to start from scratch and make his own camper, how would he do it? I was thinking he might want the last year they made (1991 I think) and then maybe a Subaru engine or something else?? Please reply when you can. Love watching your videos, especially this series comparing the 2 VW. I want the Vanagon for the tables and counter space for cooking and ability to have the Subaru conversion and rear wheel drive. I want the Eurovan since it's more stealthy and has the furnace and AC and newer equipment

MY EVC was one of the smoothest highway campers I have owned. Really did love it .The VR6 has good power and I loved the auto trans. It however is lousy on any soft surface and more likely to get stuck. The front wheels sunk in every time . I had this happen quite a few times. It's low ground clearance doesn't help. Not ideal for back woods camping. That's why I am wrapping a build on a 3.3L/230hp Subaru powered Vanagon with a reverse drive Subaru WRX 5 speed with a limited slip diff. Should be everything the EVC was and much more. More suited for remote camping . The EVC engine was also a pain to work on compared to a vanagon but very reliable. For the cost of an EVC ( if you are a DIY'er) you can build an awesome Vanagon Westfalia powered by a more powerful and reliable engine conversion.

1992 to 1996 had a VW/Audi 5-cylinder, with Digifant electronic ignition. I had a 5-speed 1992. It had 105 hp. It would cruise okay, but was still underpowered. I later bought a 2002 VR6 4 valve, 204 hp. It's more than adequate in traffic or on a cruise.

Very nice video!! Thanks for the information!! Beautiful T3 by the way!Unfortunately it is not a comparison between the T3 "Westfalia" and the T4 "California" (wich is also the VW camper factory Equipment line ). Would give a better look on both original camper interior. Cause i guess the California furnishing is much more practicable and thought- out then this furnishing version.

very good Video! i own a eurovan myself (here in Germany they arent called eurovan / vanagon) here, the eurovan looks also a bit different. In Europe we dont like the automatic trans. in the eurovan, because it breaks very often...also the vr6 engines arent very popular here in Germany, because they use a lot of fuel and they are horrible to repair. We use a lot of Diesel engines in the eurovan, from 1,9 to 2,5 Liter TDI. You got a beautiful vanagon! They are hard to find in that condition, even in Germany!

why don't you get another table for this camper/van? or,"Borrow" the one from the old Camper, and modify it to work in the new one?
@stevensgarage64518 жыл бұрын
Great video. I think one have to love a VW to camp in one because there are a lot more luxurious options that are just as capable, more room and full of luxuries like a toilet shower ac, fridge and generator. Even a pickup truck camper destroys these things.

Why don't you attach the table in the eurovan to the farthest left of the kitchen area even with the prep space to the left of the sink! Then you can access the fridge while cooking and have the table set up and access the sink as well! I mean, you won't be able to sit down on the back seat but if your cooking just use the captains chair ;)

Trans goes out because the trans oil should be flushed every 30-50,000, earlier the better. But knowing vw they say you don't need to service it. And a dealer more likely needs to do it.

They should remove the cabinet door and save it at home, with all the hardware. Then devise an attachment system inside the cabinet for two separate black cargo nets, using magnetic strips. One cargo net attaches above the bed and a second net attaches below the bed. Now you can access the cabinet from either above or below the bed, simply by pulling on either the top or one side of the cargo net and you can reach inside the cabinet. The nets can easily be reattched to the magnetic strips, inside the cabinet. For lighting, you could buy a simple, battery operated tap light, like the Luna from Home Depot. It uses 4 AA batteries. You stick the light inside the cabinet at the top of the cabinet. You can put your hand inside the cabinet and gently tap the light and it will come on. Everything would mounted inside the cabinet. If you ever decide to reattach the door, nobody would ever know that you modified the cabinet unless they looked inside. If you don't like the look of two cargo nets, you could make some custom curtains and hot glue magnetic strips on to them. Matching magnetic strips could be glued or stuck to the inside walls of the cabinet. If you experimented you could make some prototype before sticking things to your cabinets. This solution we be so lightly awkward, but at least you could get to some items with the bed down. That way too much space to completely waste.

Great review! I've owned the Eurovan full camper since Jan 1999 and have put 275,000 mi on it, and have to say, it is extremely versatile and fits our needs as a "homeschooling" camper for two years, a home for a year (adjacent to a gym for showers), a "not-so-dirtbag" climber's vehicle (Great for JT), and caving basecamp (but not for 4WD access roads). Wish we had done the GoWesty lift kit; may still do that... Should give better clearance, as it has scraped bottom a few times and does not do washboard roads at all well. We use the dual tables and slide them back and forth for handy kitchen work. Modified the mirrored cabinet (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2jZe2yFasedoLs), back storage access, added an inverter, solar shower in cargo rack. Contemplating solar like "Girl and her van" video. Thanks for posting these reviews, as we never owned a "Westy"...

+Y10Q Sorry, but thats not true : The audi inline 4 and 5 cylinder engines are known to be very durable as their concepts go back to the 70s. Specially the TD ones! But they have to get maintenance ! Specially the timing belt has to get changed every 60 T or so and u should let the Turbo cool of a bit in idle before shutting down engine after driving long freeway distances.
@Y10Q8 жыл бұрын
Jack Dahi it's a well known fact that Europeans excel in packaging. They know how to design a car body and make it comfortable. But they don't know jack shit about making a durable engine. It all has to do with little things. I had all sorts of cars and I am pretty careless when it comes to checking oil levels, changing timing belts, or looking at a coolant gauge. But get this. On this Subaru I have, they made the exhaust piping so it runs right under anything that might leak from the top, coolant, oil, fluids. Whenever the liguids start leaking they fall right on the exaust and makes smoke and you see it. Right before the timing belt was about to break, they made a small mechanical fuse which damages the water pump, it starts leaking and you see it, take it to the mechanic and save yourself lots of money. It's those little things that make Japanese engines last. They will warn you way before you have a major problem. My sister had a VW diesel bug , timing belt broke without warning. Just like that. Killed the engine. That engine could have easily gone 500k miles if it were designed better.
