I remember watching the DPRK vs Brazil game in London in 2010 (in a pub) and the Koreans gave everything in that game, they were phenomenally fair, gracious and committed. They left everything they had on the pitch that day and suffered for it against Portugal. But the pub went from supporting Brazil to the DPRK by the end We love an underdog and they were like a non league side in the 5th round of the FA cup that day.

Keep in mind that in the 60s North Korea was in better shape than South Korea thanks to Soviets backing. And since Soviets was cutting edge in many fields at expense of basic civilian comforts, they can go big in their selected programs. North Korea probably had utter focus in World Cup there.

No, that isn’t true. Many of these same players would go on to play in the 2012 AFC challenge cup and some would go on to play in leagues. The idea that North Korea kills there athletes is completely unsubstantiated and often easily disproven yet people still believe it for some reason.
