The key point to personal brand: Share more of the things you already love and enjoy, and not "some things" to create an image. Of course, sharing things you love will create an image too, but a genuine one. I'm loving you sharing this. Makes me feel we are friends already 🌸✨

Yes - one thing that's helped me in this season is recognizing that i'm building an online PORTFOLIO of who i am as a person. It's not about getting views, likes, etc. It's about building a feed that I feel represents who I am. My feed acts as a filter. Most times when I post things outside of my niche, it's not even about performance. It's about putting it out there so people know what I'm about.

@@JohnnyVichi I think our personal interests create our personal brand. Let’s say you’re a realtor, you can share about that and sell houses. As Vanessa says, what we share on Instagram Feed, in this case, is in order to build a portfolio that will give people who come to our account a glimpse of who we are, and the goal is to attract and connect with people who share the same interests.

Omg Vanessa. This is so spot on. 2 weeks ago, YT has rejected my monetization application because of reused contents in my Shorts and Long Form Videos. I pivoted and talk about myself and interest. Being myself more than ever. I did a lot of Live videos. To my suprise, omg my views and watched hours sky rocketed. Yes, you are right, niching down is really outdated. I striped down to the simple plain me in the video. Nothing fancy, no video effects, no editing, no voice over, no studio shooting. Just plain simple.

Funny you brought this up because I tweeted these thoughts yesterday: Remember, the world doesn't care about all of the vast elements of who you are; the world ( marketplace / social space ) just wants what it wants from you: It would prefer that you be a mountain that gets sanded down to a rock, then down to a shiny diamond for public consumption. And then, once the mountainous, and vast evergreens of who you are has been reduced to a rock, that gets cut down to a shiny diamond, eventually, this won't even be enough, and the world will bang it's hammer over and over on top of you just to see if you will break... ( It's better to grow slower and build a community than crash land due to hollow and repetitive engagement. Great video as always Vanessa!!! :) )

Yep i went thru hell when i abandoned Minecraft Content (which gave me 900k out of my 1.1 million subs) and i killed my channel in the process but the thing is that i really tried to build a personal thing, even then most of the views went away after that Went from 100k+ per video to 5-30k now 🫠 Idk gaming is so weird, some of the old subs are still there tho But yeah i kinda grew to hate the gaming community as a whole cause most of it is very toxic and i really have nothing in common with their worldview even tho i run a gaming channel lol I post more personal stuff on my socials but most of them dont get it (maybe its because they are way younger and dont care about my interests as a 32yo man) or just unfollow me all the time idk its hard but im still going after 15 years But yeah im happier now that i do whatever i want whenever i want.. tho i wish someday i can get an audience that truly gets me🥹 Great video as always!

Great video. I think it's also super important to add context that you have built a core audience of people and proven success to a certain niche and now have the flexibility to go wider. Most people - simply put, aren't known and they need to prove they care about other people in a niche and go narrow, then go wider once people know you care about them, then they will care about you.
@VanessaLau3 ай бұрын
@@EnricoIncarnati thank you for watching!!! I actually think the “go narrow then go wide” is a bit dated. I think there’s MANY MORE creators now than ever before, so from the get go I think newer creators should be building their personal brands alongside creating content within a niche. Just taking the playbook from a lot of the creators on TikTok that have successfully reached more people - they’ve really allowed their personality to shine beyond the content from the jump. Information alone IMO isn’t enough anymore, people want to fall in love with personalities, characters etc. just my hot take though!
@EnricoIncarnati3 ай бұрын
@@VanessaLau fair point - that feels more for “influencer” people - given the playbook of most successful entrepreneurs being as specific as possible for most business owners who are looking to build a business, that’s the move first. I think you can inject personality within your content and find formats that work for you but when it’s specifically looking to build a business I think it’s a bit different. And sure, information is everywhere, doesn’t mean it’s always the right information.

10:51 "I was very burnt out from that, to the point where I almost resented it" 💯 I felt this to my core! THIS has been my biggest struggle as a content creator, especially when the questions come off as just being too lazy to find a simple answer for themselves. Yea, those are easy to answer, but it gets old, FAST! And it goes back to attracting the type of people you would want to hangout with. I understand my perspective is a key reason I'm in the position to give advice on my primary niche, but I'm just not going to vibe like that with someone that can't do a 5 minute Google search for a simple question.
@VanessaLau3 ай бұрын
Yes, it's because we've trained your community to treat you like a Q&A forum. It's not their fault, it's just that we've normalized it. I mean, of course they'll just be asking you questions especially if your content is all information based, devoid of any emotion or personality. But once you open the doors of your other interests, the DMs definitely become a lot more interesting and fun. There's more variety, and if someone does ask you a question related to your niche, you'll now feel less resentful because not ALL your DMs are like that. Another thing I've learned is to have people meet you half way. For example, if they ask a question I've already covered, I'll just send the video and then say Watch the video first, and then lmk if you have any questions. If they dont watch the video, then that's on them, and no question will be answered. Sometimes you need people to meet you half way first in order for you to pour into them.

Hey Vanessa, I've been following you for years and absolutely love your content and really admire you! I think you're the best in the game, you're always so genuine and your videos are easy to understand and really fun to watch too. That's why I kindly wanted to request a video: I'm an artist (digital & traditional art) and find it hard to implement a lot of advice, because the art business seems so different to me than any other niches. You have the artwork and then you have the artist. The artwork is usually not just a product you buy because you need it or because it solves a specific problem, you buy it because you just like it so you buy the painting or print. So I'm not sure how, I as a the artist, can put myself more in the foreground and build a brand with my art. I can see how sharing more of yourself would motivate people to get a certain service or product for other niches, but isn't it different with art? Someone may like me as an artist, as a person, but that wouldn't change whether they like my art or even if they do, decide if they purchase something. That's why I would love to request a video where you talk about implementing these kinds of things for artist and how things may be different for our niche (Maybe they aren't and I just can't see it yet!). Hope you have a lovely day!

@@VanessaLau It's definitely one I would thoroughly enjoy watching. I'm sure there's plenty of others who would soak up that information and benefit from hearing your personal take, experience, and stories on building a personal brand :)

Vanessa I think this is really insightful but I do think it's easier to build a personal brand when you already have following. Do you think this would work for beginners too?
@VanessaLau3 ай бұрын
I don't believe in "once I have X, then I can do Y" mentality in this case. I think it's important to do both simultaneously from the get go. In fact, I actually recommend with playing with topics outside of your niche especially when you're starting because of the following reasons: 1. Test what you like and don't like creating 2. Open yourself to other opportunities you might not have thought of if you stuck to a niche Even for me, when I started, I wasn't talking about social media from the get-go. I talked about a variety of stuff. It just turned out that social media at the time was what hit it off for me, and so I "niched down" on that. That was 5+ years ago. If I could go back in time, I would have posted content around my interests IN ADDITION to whatever my niche was, just to build more dimension to my brand and also have more fun with my community.

I'm legit screaming "I love you" because I have been so much against the idea that all you have to do with your social media is your expertise. I feel like it kills the aspect of socializing.

My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now, thanks to my FA, my portolio is doing really great and I'm proud of the decisions i made last year.

years back, it used to be taught to decide on your long term goals to help decide if personal brand or product brand. if you want to sell the business in the future, don't use your name in your domain, etc... be careful about making it all about you. this is the same for offline as well. i think the folks starting in the last 5-6 years (maybe longer) built so fast that they missed the basics..

Great video Vanessa! I like the point you made about how its unrealistic to talk about the same thing for decades. Its only natural for us as content creators to want to talk about or share different things outside of our niche. Many content creators that I follow do not stick to their niche and it doesn't stop me from watching their content. I also like that you share the things you enjoy doing outside of work. Thanks for giving me this idea. This is something that plan on doing too on my social media platforms
@VanessaLau3 ай бұрын
Love that! Exactly. The message is not to NOT have a niche, but it's the dangers of STICKING to it like no other. It's important to sprinkle aspects of YOU so people fall in love with you, not just your information. I love that you continue to support the creators you follow, in whatever season of life that takes them. Thank you Dave for leaving a comment and sharing your thoughts with us!

aww thank you for this video Vanessa! I love that you mentioned Harry Potter and character building because it’s one of my favorite books and I was wondering why do I like it so much! And it’s truly because of the characters! I think after a while I had stopped learning more about myself and embracing my interests because it felt like it didn’t fit into a “niche” and from then on I felt incredibly stuck and uninspired. I started feeling unsure about what my interests even are these days! I’ve been wanting to break free from these limiting thoughts and the urge to hide because I actually want to share & create 🥹

I totally agree . I started my blog and channel to help people avoid the mistakes my family made by not planning for aging (outside of saving money for retirement). That is not a single topic discussion. So I threw the guru advice out the window on Day 1. My success will be measured by every like, comment, share, and subscribe.
@VanessaLau3 ай бұрын
Love that! What would you say your success is measured by now? :)
@AgingOnYourTerms3 ай бұрын
@VanessaLau I should have said 'is measured by' instead of 'will be'. I worked hard enough, and invested, to be able to walk away from Corporate America at the age of 55 after being laid off. I didn't start this as a side hustle, or main hustle. I started it as a philanthropic journey to give back. So, I guess I'm saying my success is being measured by all of the THANK YOUs.
