I'm a small person (158cm) and you might think 29er is too big for me. let's try 29er on super steep rough trails at Burke Mountain and see how I feel!

It's often better to hear what less experienced rider has to say than someone with decades of exp. Regardless wheter they can explain MTB stuff really well or not. Especially when we are of similar level. DH Pro can "explain" things to you, that you never felt or noticed, thus are pretty useless, cause if you don't notice stuff, you can't counteract them anyway.

I really believe that 29" is not for short people, no matter how much marketing BS the manufacturers makes up. I'm worried, that rear tyre rubbing will cost Yuka dearly one day. So many videos on YT with the worst OTBs on drops and steep technical routy steps caused by stopping the rear wheel as the bike trancends the obstacle with the front wheel.

Every time I watch your video’s I gain a bit more confidence and try a new technique. I hope you and Eric are enjoying your new bikes. Burke Mountian is a great place to explore and really get use to those 29ers. Burke is my home mountain (I live at the base) and you are right. There are a lot of features. Even the trees are features. Two trees in a V, with a 1/2” clearance, showed me what technical riding was all about. Dead Stop and trapped. Ouch!

I also just switched to 29" in March, straight from 26", skipping 27.5". I had hesitated to even consider riding anything larger than 26" for a very long time, because I'm only 5'8" with a typical Japanese "long torso & short legs" combo (胴長短足), LOL! So I was pleasantly surprised how seamless the transition to 29" was, while benefiting from its positive traits. Probably all thanks to modern-29" geo (especially Transition's SBG) - climbs, gaps, drops, steeps are all good. Enjoy your new 29" rig, and keep 'em 「よっこいしょ」 coming!

I had the same experience as Yuka, hitting my butt on my first 29er ride. Gradually, I hit it less and less. It's all about recalibrating the required body movement to get over stuff. Generally, bigger wheels are harder to move around but we might not need to move it as much anyway.

I'm not tall either at 5'5" and I have a 29er and a 27.5. I love them both. The 29er doesn't feel too big, it's a small frame but with good geometry I guess so feels good. Seat posts for small riders are a pain though, I agree! I've had to find one with the maximum insert so I can get it out of the way when it's down.

I went from 26 to 29er and new geometry. my first ride unlucky I broke my cheek on a tree not used to slower steering. my 29 will accept 27.5+ maybe that is a good size? I will try soon... Thank you so much for the great content!

27.5+ work great, they are faster than 29ers, more controlled, and work amazing in dry and sandy conditions. Not in the mud. I do downhill on them and never had a flat. The grip levels are insane. But really any wheel size will work as long as your technique is good. The differnces are marginal.

The thing about 29ers is that while it's more stable, the axle is higher from the ground and because of that it makes it harder to create lift on the front and rotate around that axle. That's the real issue with 29ers and shorter riders instead of just clearance. The amount of leverage we short riders have when pulling the front wheel up is significantly less than taller riders

I would suggest that maybe given your height that you would be one of the few people that would benefit from a 27.5 in the rear vs the 29. You think your jumping higher only because you are sitting taller. The 29 in the front would give you the roll over your looking for and the 27 in the rear would give you better control, because of so many factors. 29's are more stable in the air as Eric says only because they are like gyros in the air and are not as easy to throw around as a 27 and so people dont trow them around as much as a 27.

Your sizing issues reminds me of visiting a custom bike shop in Korea last year - the American guy who ran it said that he found that Koreans tend to have long bodies and short legs compared to most Asians, which meant he had to have some very weird geometries to get it right for some customers. Some of the bikes he showed me were very strange looking (super long wheelbase in proportion to the rest of the bike), but it seemed the only way for some people to really enjoy riding. His bikes were road and hardtails, I guess its even harder for full suss bikes. So you can at least be grateful your proportions are Japanese, not Korean!
