Very good advice. I would add that dollar cost averaging on a single stock carries risk but long term DCA on a S&P tracker has proven to be a great strategy.

Great video Nick! First one I've seen of yours. I'm a fairly new Vanguard investor, joining April 2021. Dumb question - as all my accounts have tanked in Jan + Feb like yours have, but we are still believing in the markets continuing to grow long term - is now a good time to be investing lump sums? As they'll obviusly see good growth when markets recover.
@nickjm4108
@nickjm4108 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe - your question is the classic lump sum investing vs dollar cost averaging questions. No one can predict the future but we have that the evidence shows that lump sum investing beats dollar cost averaging around 65% of the time. Just because the market has dipped now doesn’t mean lump sum investing would beat dollar cost averaging as… no one can predict the future!

Hi Nick, nice seeing the Channel growth and yes this is my first time seeing a sell off because i only started with Vanguard last Feb, but managed to put in 99% of the ISA allowance. But I’m not panicking to much despite the current correction, because I’m in for the long run and it doesn’t make any sense to sell of my stocks to make a loss. I’m going to try and continue with some consistency to balance the averages! 👍
@BartoniGaming
@BartoniGaming 2 жыл бұрын
don’t panic just put in weekly or monthly. lumping all in at once could mean you bought at a high point. dollar cost averaging over the year means you reduce your chance of losing and also buying in at the mean average over the year. 👍

Reassuringly honest. Ive got Vanguard stocks and shares ISA's invested in lifestyle funds with large risky equity percentages and, Im getting hammered right now but, I intend to hang in there. The observations made here I found poignant and personally accurate as regards my attitudes. the summary is reassuring overall tho.

I think i am over watching the vwrl price but it seems that sometimes if the us market does really well after our stock market close this isnt always reflected the next day. yet the lifestaratagy 100 will have gone up a fair bit as its valued after hours ,is this the way of etfs in general ,driven my market sentiment rather than the actual value of the stocks it contains ? Assuming you came into a large sum of money (equivalent to your ISA allowance) some time in April. Are you lumping it all in one buy asap or is your strategy to stretch your buys out throughout the year?

Hi Ozy - no large sum of money recently? Are you talking about April 2020? If so, that was me selling down all my matches betting profits. I lump summed it into my portfolio (which is why you see a big jump)

@@nickjm4108 no sorry, it was a hypothetical "What would you do if in two months you gained a large lump sum, through bonds or unexpected inheritance". I assume you would put some into your business, but I was wondering if you would lump sum into VWRL during the current fear mongering in the market or stretch out your investment to see what happened over time.
@nickjm4108
@nickjm4108 2 жыл бұрын
@@ozymemedias7359 hey Ozy. Aaa got you. This is your typical Lump Sum vs Dollar Cost Average question. I would say the primary two factors are your risk tolerance and the size of the lump sum as a percentage of your investments. All the data shows lump sum investing wins 66% of the time so unless the money was literally several 100k, then I would probs just lump sum it.

When US interest rates rise it will affect the rest of the world and especially emerging markets, that have a lot of debt priced in US dollars, so i should imagine capital will flee from there and go stateside, ironically. So, stocks will go up, especially in the DOW 30, despite rising interest rates.

What you don't take into account is when big market crashes occur how long the recovery takes. If you invested in 1928, you would not have seen a return until 1954. If you invested in 1998, you would not have seen a return until 2011. This is just relating to the S&P500 too. If you invested in the Nikkei in the 80s, you still would not have seen a return on your money to this day. Investing passively has it's benefits if you start really young, but imagine investing at the age of 40 during a long bull run and something as catastrophic as an asset bubble causes a crash so hard that the index doesn't recover for 25+ years. You don't see a penny until 65 at which point you're breakeven (that is if you don't average down). Personally, I think index funds are great, but it does pose the question of value and price discovery, especially during times like the pandemic where 80% of the money printed found itself onto the stock market and inflated the price of everything.
@nickjm4108
@nickjm4108 2 жыл бұрын
Investing is all about time horizons. If you start investing in your 40s then you will likely have an edge into bonds. Your point of 80% of money being printed is an argument of being in equities. Yes - you can pin point certain indexes and certain time periods but trying to buying at the ‘right time’ has been proven to be a fruitless exercise.

@@nickjm4108 Actually this is only in comparison to most hedge fund managers which isn't the best comparison. The goal of a hedge fund is capital preservation. There are a lot of successful active fund managers that beat the S&P500 regularly year after year.

@@nickjm4108 Yes of course, and I would actively encourage anyone who wants to invest to do this but at the same time I wouldn't knock active investing because by passive investing, you really aren't going to make a substantial amount without compounding whereas with active investing at least you do have the possibility of hitting big numbers early on albeit very hard and rare.
