honestly as much as i love this movie, it is still to this day the most disturbing movie i ever watched, because it manages to stir something up deep inside... it awakenes you even just for a brief moment that life is just a dream, and none of this is actually real, its just in our heads.

I know exactly what you mean. There isn’t a word to describe what it does to the psyche but I know Cameron Crowe and Nancy Wilson’s music selection and score had a lot to do with that feeling it evokes. It’s a beautiful tragedy

Well rent is real, hunger pains are real as is illness and injury are all real. I wish life was a dream that way I could dream up my finances and be comfortable. That said, I agree with you about this movie... something about it still gets to me and I'm not sure why. Cameron Crowe has made a lot of great films over the decades, and imho I think Vanilla Sky is one of his masterpieces.

Cameron Crowe decided wisely. In the original it is more about what is not said. The love, regret and uncertainty are all too clear, there is no need to spell it out. To me, articulating these emotions diminishes the poignancy. The way they interact already speaks volumes at this point. But the scene does gives a nice view on the creative process they went through.

This isn't shot nearly as beautifully as the OG ending but I like quite a few things more in this version. For one I like Sophia's speech more in this and I like how kurt Russell's character (blanking on his name) still thinks he's real and tries to convince david not to jump. Lastly I like the actual jump in this better with the added dialogue and scenes from his actual life. Though I don't like him screaming he wants to wake up. The original does have a more consistent tone though and this version seems more clunky. Basically I think they both have their pros and cons and even though I like more of the individual moments in the alternate ending, I think the og works better as a whole. I'd love a mish mash of both though. If only lol.

The ending is that he chooses to wake up from his cryogenic sleep which he has been in for over a hundred years... When he jumps he wakes up right before he hits the ground just like in real life often when you dream you're falling you always wake up. Then there are different theories for the awekening and the cryogenic sleep, I think the best one is that everything after the crash is a dream and that the entire rest of the movie he is in a coma and LE isn't real either, it's part of his comadream and when Sofia says "open your eyes" when the movie ends that is when he actually wakes up from the crash. That's just a theory though... but it's a good one.

I can see why this scene was axed. Too much talk overall (especially Kurt Russell), it was not necessary & it broke the intensity between Cruise & Cruz. Penelope Cruz in the final scene is just an projected illusion. Whereas in the alternative one she is saying things like come and find me and what to look for, as if she is still alive (in the real world), waiting for him as soon as he wakes up. The used ending 'less is more' kind of scenario. The director made the correct choice IMHO!

I find this ending more poignant. Since Sofia is a reflection of David’s thoughts regarding who Sofia was you could see the yearning and enduring love he still had for her. So that extended interaction they had regarding how she would find him again was his own thoughts about true love. 2:28 David almost convinced himself to return to his lucid dream to be with her again only to be pulled back to reality by what McCabe said. The way he looked back at Sofia regarding McCabe harkens back to his fondest memories with her along with the dynamics of how they interacted with each other at the party where they first met during his original life. This was the moment that David truly reconciled his dreams from his reality. As he gently pulled away from Sofia; he knew he had to return to reality. Before resetting his existence; he looks back at Sofia one last time encapsulating her memory within his heart for all eternity...

I’m glad they didn’t go with this ending. A lot of people think this was a love story. It most definitely was not. He only knew her for a few days and she rejected him once she saw his new face. That’s not love. He only idealized her because they had an intense magnetic attraction and he very much liked her and was in lust. He only put her as his love interest in his dream because of that, and to save his ego and make the dream amazing, but they barely knew each other. She wasn’t the sweet innocent fawn that his mind made her out to be, and wanted her to be.

I much prefer this ending. In the other ending, Sofia is more like an NPC (nonplayable character) in a video game. She has the same expression and almost nothing to say. She doesn't even say "I love you". David and the movie audience don't want this because it was nothing like the real Sofia. The audience wants some mystery/magic/spirituality. We are left to wonder if this is a result of brilliant computer programming or something more profound. It's easy to walk away from an NPC. It has to be hard for David to leave her and this ending achieves that feeling better than the other ending. Leave the apology in because he betrayed her by getting in the car and he's remorseful. Leave “I can’t settle for a dream” and leave Sofia's full dialogue. Cut out the interruptions by the doc.

I guarantee they didn't go with this ending because of the existential breakdown of the therapist. It is kind of horrifying to put yourself in his shoes of realizing that you aren't real and about to be erased as a program. Even he wanted to live. So in that sense, shutting down the program is essentially murdering him and everyone else in it. 🤔🤔

So glad that they didn't choose this turnip of an ending, it would've spoiled a great movie.

3:48 Included in the final life-scenes is a shootout at the hall where he had called for "technical suppoooooooooort". Can't see it on youtube. You must download and play ultra slomo. So what in the world is up with that shootout and why did the director include it in a subliminal way only ??!??

This is exactly how I remember the ending. What's different about it? This makes me wonder if the DVD I had was the alternate ending and I've never actually seen the theatrical cut.
