Hi Jenn, thank you for this recipe. So, what I do so that I don't have to cut away any of the bottom layer, I just flip the cake flat side up. I do this because: I don't have a steady hand and therefore end up cutting it unevenly; I wouldn't want to waste any; and finally, I'm just too lazy. This recipe you shared with us is lovely, and your cake turned out beautifully.

I made the chocolate version added almond flavor. Put a little in cupcake papers, put cherry pie filling and topped with the rest of cake batter. Chocolate almond cherry filled cupcakes. You can’t go wrong

What a beautiful cake, Jenn! And so perfect for those whose pantry might be running low right about now. Love the flowers you topped it with. Another idea might be to sprinkle some pink or yellow sugar on top, and top it off with an Easter peep! Sounds like you're all ready for tomorrow. I think I'll roast a chicken and make some sides to go along with it for our dinner. Keto whoopie pies for dessert, woo hoo! Wishing you a very blessed and meaningful Easter

@@whenwithjenn Thank you for this special edition Depression Era recipe! I am SO interested in this type of cooking...even more so now. I learned so much from my Nana, standing beside her on a chair while she baked. It sounds like you are very close to your Grandma, too. That was 50 years ago, but the memories are still so fresh. Funny story about Nana...she also taught me to wipe down the cake mixer, so one time when I borrowed my friend's hand mixer, I of course, wiped it down thoroughly before I returned it....when I handed it to her, she said, "Wow, this has never been so clean!" lol

You are very welcome. I am very close to both my grandmothers. They are the ladies who taught me to cook. I'm sad to say my grandmother who I spoke about in this video passed quite a few years ago but is still very much a part of our lives. Funny enough our times in the kitchen is where I have the most memories and where I share stories of her with my little ones. 🥰

I have to say , I throughly enjoyed this video ! I am very inspired by the depression cooking and I enjoyed hearing you talk about your grandma and your beautiful memories ! This cake looks absolutely delicious and I am saving this recipe to try sometime ! It’s a great recipe to have on hand ! What an awesome idea to put some fresh flowers 🌸 on top ! I actually made your cranberry chocolate magic bars for Christmas 🎄 and they were so delicious! I’ve made them several times already ! Keep up the great work you are doing on your channel ! I am a fan - and I am not just saying that ! I sincerely mean it ! Truthfully, right now I don’t really know what I am making for Easter yet - but I am not worried because something always comes to me - and I have a natural ability to just throw sometime together with no problem! Have a wonderful healthy Easter holiday ! 🥰🌿🌷🙏

You're cake looks good! I wish I had seen this recipe before the one I used. I saw another recipe just like yours except there was 3 cups of AP flour instead of 3.5. Well, the cake I made was a gummy disaster! I am going to try to make this cake again and hopefully it will turn out fluffy.

Hi just wanna ask if i could turn the heat low?will it turn fluffy still? I just wanted to know so it will turn flat and i dont have to cut the dome area on top.

Curious what the baking time would be for a 9x13 pan. I would love to do layers, but I bake for the hubs lunches and a layer cake won't fit the containers I have. (and he doesn't need that much cake in a lunch box) Any suggestions?

@@whenwithjenn hi Jen. Thanks. Um. Do u think I should balance out with minusing flour for amount of cocoa that needs to be added. That should work. Isn't. Its such a lovely recipe. Would be a shame if I couldn't use the same recipe for a chocolate. Got all all these 101 different chocolate cake recipes. I just need one basic one. And yours could be it. I certainly do hope so. Sounds really fun but I do not have a recipe for a cake like that. I imagine you could cut out the center and fill with a chocolate ganache. Best of luck!

My son is now allergic to dairy, peanuts, tree nuts (EXCEPT ALMONDS), and bananas. When he was younger, he was also allergic to eggs plus several other foods. So when I wanted to bake a birthday cake for him, I had no idea how to do this. Fortunately, my daughter has a friend who is vegan so she shared her recipe for a chocolate Wacky Cake. It was delicious and it became the only cake my son ever had until he was grown. I have learned that vanilla and lemon wacky cakes are also yummy! Now my son is grown, and he has requested an almond cake for his birthday. Can I just sub almond extract for the vanilla extract in the wacky cake recipe? Should I put some almond paste somewhere in the vanilla cake recipe? I am very inexperienced and rarely bake anything at all, so your help is appreciated. Thanks!

@@whenwithjenn It’s interesting how people focus on what they perceive as negative while others see the beauty in it. As an avid gardener, the dark, rich soil and the green foliage looks lovely to me. Don’t be sorry, it’s neither their plant or video. They could have easily chosen another video without leaving a comment. I’m not trying to start an argument, but there are more pressing issues in the world. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful recipe and backstory. I have been looking for the vanilla version of the cake and voilà. Have a beautiful day.
