Film: Vanity Fair (BBC 1998, miniseries)
Music: Bertine Zetlitz - For Fun

"She was small and slight in person; pale, sandy-haired, and with eyes habitually cast down: when they looked up they were very large, odd, and attractive; so attractive that the Reverend Mr. Crisp, fresh from Oxford, and curate to the Vicar of Chiswick, the Reverend Mr. Flowerdew, fell in love with Miss Sharp; being shot dead by a glance of her eyes which was fired all the way across Chiswick Church from the school-pew to the reading-desk.
[...]
By the side of many tall and bouncing young ladies in the establishment, Rebecca Sharp looked like a child. [...] But she never had been a girl, she said; she had been a woman since she was eight years old. Oh, why did Miss Pinkerton let such a dangerous bird into her cage?
The fact is, the old lady believed Rebecca to be the meekest creature in the world, so admirably, on the occasions when her father brought her to Chiswick, used Rebecca to perform the part of the ingenue; and only a year before the arrangement by which Rebecca had been admitted into her house, and when Rebecca was sixteen years old, Miss Pinkerton majestically, and with a little speech, made her a present of a doll-which was, by the way, the confiscated property of Miss Swindle, discovered surreptitiously nursing it in school- hours. How the father and daughter laughed as they trudged home together after the evening party (it was on the occasion of the speeches, when all the professors were invited) and how Miss Pinkerton would have raged had she seen the caricature of herself which the little mimic, Rebecca, managed to make out of her doll. Becky used to go through dialogues with it; it formed the delight of Newman Street, Gerrard Street, and the Artists' quarter: and the young painters, when they came to take their gin-and-water with their lazy, dissolute, clever, jovial senior, used regularly to ask Rebecca if Miss Pinkerton was at home: she was as well known to them, poor soul! as Mr. Lawrence or President West. Once Rebecca had the honour to pass a few days at Chiswick; after which she brought back Jemima, and erected another doll as Miss Jemmy: for though that honest creature had made and given her jelly and cake enough for three children, and a seven-shilling piece at parting, the girl's sense of ridicule was far stronger than her gratitude, and she sacrificed Miss Jemmy quite as pitilessly as her sister."
- Vanity Fair, Chapter 2.

Witherspoon's Becky was more of a 'victim,' and not how she was in the book. This was SUCH a better and more realistic version.

agree completely. Witherspoon is not sexy or alloring enough to play Becky Sharp. She's dull and uncharismatic. This version is the absolute best adaptation.

That movie would have been better of they just called it something else and named the characters different names. Since it is nothing like the book Becky is suppose to be horrible.

I loved Natasha Little in Vanity Fair. And I love this fan Vid -it captures her most winsome, captivating, and totally manipulative expressions

It makes one wonder why they keep remaking this. Any thinking person would realize further attempts are futile. NL IS Becky Sharp.

@brownies4you I'm with you on the musical score! I was constantly having to turn the volume down. But that was my only complaint! WONDERFUL adaptation! Natasha Little was brilliant (as was the actor playing Dobbins, I loved him!)

Good compilation, I missed to see the original! It was still good to see Natasha in 2004 version, as the good fairy. Quite odd though, next to Reese it seemed like an insult, a betrayal to a role that suit her so well, Reese was kind of a joke to this movie, actually the whole movie, the 2004 version was a joke.

Fantastic vid. I would love to see the vid where she puts Amelia in her place and tells her the truth about George - and berates her for her shameful treatment of faithful Dobbin. Go Becky.

Since Becky treated her son like shit..and used her husband it was done for effect & because it suited her books to get Dobbin out the way. In the novel she marries Amelias brother swindles him out of his money & poisons him.. what a woman!!😆

This miniseries of "Vanity Fair" is divided into six episodes. Once the second episode gets going, the movie becomes riveting. (Sorry, but I found the first episode slightly tedious.) My patience was richly rewarded. Natasha Little's portrayal of "Becky Sharp" was outstanding. She "hit it out of the park" with her powerful acting. If you have a chance, watch this miniseries. Warning:The film's intermittent brass band musical score is jarring. It became tiresome for most of my friends.
