I have a spinal cord injury and use a wheelchair. I live and travel full time SOLO in my accessible campervan. In this video I am making my way back to Canada after spending my winter in California. I encounter an inaccessible campground and have to problem solve on the road. I also reflect on the anniversary of the day I became paralyzed.

I think too that we get tired of always having to be 'on'. Having to problem solve the shower, water accessibility...yeah yeah...having to bring it up with the camp ground/hotel etc management is just almost a regular thing. So rarely is it as easy as go there, use facilities and leave without issue. I think it has a cumulative emotional effect, a wearying of our spirit. Yes, we continue to fight on (no choice really), but like you showed after your 'luxury' stay - an experience where disability is not 'problematized' becomes a pleasure. I hope a time does come when more time is devoted to the pleasure part for all of us.

This!! 100%! It feels like a full-time job advocating for yourself. An unpaid job at that. I have also learned that if you don’t follow up and “nudge” them…changes don’t get made. I agree it’s exhausting. I too look forward to a day with much improvement for accessibility.

So sorry that happened to you, and likely countless others, through no fault of your own. BUT, I'm glad you mentioned to the people there that "access" wasn't actually accessable. And kudos to the campground for trying to make improvements after being made aware of the deficiencies in their "accessible" facilities!!

I grew up in Washington State and spent a lot of time traveling around with my grandmother (dad's mom). She told me many stories about growing up in an orphanage in Minnesota and surviving the Great Depression. She taught me how to dig for clams, fish, and eat dandelions and of course blackberries. My mom is borderline or narcissist, I'm not sure (not officially diagnosed). I think about my grandmother every day. I live in Georgia near Savannah and I am looking forward to traveling around Georgia.

I hit difficulties with accessibility a lot as a wheelchair ♿ USER.... this day and age this shouldn't be happening ..... why say its accessible when it's not .... not much thought goes into it ..... I was at a store shopping asked if they had an accessible toilet they said yes 😂 I went to it door was very heavy after struggling I had to use my chair to push open the door which hurt my leg then got inside the toilet was very small barely could turn my chair and toilet roll holder was high up ....I had to wait until I got home ..... all these places are designed by non disabled so they don't think things through ..... I'm sorry this happened to you but glad you managed to get water in the end ❤

But still they need to do a lot more for disabled people. They just don't think about everything that we really need to make things include the accessible to us.😊

Thanks very much for this look at your travels. I always enjoy your videos, but this one was esp enjoyable. I'm glad you got a chance to see your experience from another perspective in editing. There's definitely good that comes from being a "glass half full" person, but it can also lead to putting up with a lot of systemic ableism, leaving it unchanged. You mentioned it had taken ~2.5 hrs out of your day and I think that's another thing that abled folks tend to actually blame disabled people for. Schools, workplaces...they think of disabled people as lazy or flaky when it's actually the compound effects of systemic ableism that would make someone late to school or work. You can only budget so much extra fudge time in! I'm glad you brought it up to the camp worker and really hope NV will improve that campground. In your camping & outdoors adventures, do you ever meet wheelchair users that do not have SCIs and might have different access needs within wheelchair accessible infrastructure? It'd be great to hear what you feel what you've learned from other disabled people (and vice versa).

I have a few friends with visions loss and I almost want to say accessibility for that is further behind than access for wheelchairs. And I have e a few friends that use a wheelchair but can walk or stand for short periods…am I ever envious! A curb or misplaced shower bench isn’t as much of a barrier. And then I have friends who use a power wheelchair that are envious that I can open doors etc on my own. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that everyone faces a challenge, some are just more visible than others.

I searched online for 'curb ramp for wheelchairs' and there were things for getting up on curbs. Have you thought of getting one of those? Also, could you bring a water chair to use in the shower? I know you have limited space. I just thought maybe it would be a good backup for when these sites let you down. It sucks that they are not really wheelchair accessible and I think they SHOULD hire you as a consultant. You would be great at it. You are such a positive person. I love what you said about your van and how much you love it. I totally get it and you're so blessed to have your van and your freedom to camp and travel alone and be in our sacred nature. Peace! And blessings to you.

I do have ramps to load my bike and if I was completely out of water I would have tried those to get on the curb. It would’ve been more time to dig them out so chose not to this time. I definitely have considered traveling with a shower bench but, as you mentioned, space is limited. I may re-arrange my garage this summer to find a spot for one.

❤❤Thank you, unfortunately I'm not that fit anymore, arthritis in my hands after more than 40 years in a wheelchair. It's great how you've managed to get around. Do you also have a video of how you transfer to bed? By the way, in Europe there are shower bags that you can fill with water and then take a shower, that would be an emergency solution. Incidentally, I used to shower in my wheelchair when I went to the spa, I always sprayed the ball bearings with oil beforehand, then cut off 4 plastic hats from the top around the ball bearings, it's practical like an umbrella, can be taken off after showering, made around the small wheels, plastic bag around the back seat, seat cushion in plastic bag (had one with a zipper fastener) with a towel over it and that's how I showered when there was no shower wheelchair in the spa. An emergency solution. You can put a bed sheet (not a fitted sheet) in the bus or in the bathroom and turn with the wheelchair so that the dirt doesn't stick to the wheelchair and your bus isn't so dirty.

@Keepinitwheel306 10 күн бұрын
Great suggestions! My bearings get trashed from the salt water when I surf so I have always been worried about doing more harm with showering in the chair. I have an “elevator” to get me up to the bed, it’s shown in the video entitled “The Cost to make my campervan wheelchair accessible”

I’m so bummed for you that the bench is too far from the water!😳 Would you please report that? They could easily install an extension. No access to water and electricity! Unacceptable!!!🤯

Things we overlook. A shameful version of "access". They need to hire you to consult and test.

These handicap facilities should be designed or through consulting with handicapped wheelchair bound campers.

Thanks for showing your transfer to the driver's seat. I have a power adjustable seat base and it doesn't really work that well for me. I'm either dragging my knees on the other chair when I turn or hitting the wall or door panel if I'm back too far. The sweet spot isn't that sweet. I'm thinking about converting back and to a normal seat base with a swivel, especially after seeing your transfer. What are thoughts on this?

Have you considered removing the passenger seat? If it’s not needed? My friend Alex did that and his transfer is much easier but I understand if you need to keep the seat.

Hey, i love your videos and the hope it gives me for still being able to travel once i have the money. I have a question that you probably already answered in a previous video, but how do you stop your wheelchair from moving around when you sre driving i find that when ever mine is put i a boot of a car even with the breaks on it still moves around a load.

Hi! When I transfer to the driver’s seat my chair sits behind the passenger seat. From there, I just wrap a bungee cord around the footrest and attach it to a little handle on the passenger seat. Hope this helps!

I know you shouldn't have to. But for these types of situations, have you considered carrying a portable folding ramp?

I do have my ramps for my bike that I could use in a pinch. I’m really contemplating carrying a shower chair that I could assemble but space in the van is limited.
