Hi Jayson, at 2:09 we are simply removing the anthers as the pollen can stain your skin and clothes if you brush against it. The pollen is also toxic to cats if they ingest it. However, many gardeners leave the anthers on the plant as they prefer how the lilies look this way. Either way is fine. We hope this helps.

hi, just watched about 10-12 lily videos,,,,this was by far the best. Do you have any thoughts about letting the flowers go to seed, and what to do with seed pods?
@vanmeuwenplants
@vanmeuwenplants 8 жыл бұрын
You can let the seed pods develop if you want to but the seedlings will take quite a long time to reach maturity and produce flowers. Thats why they are normally sold as mature bulbs. If you want to try then kust leave the seed pods on the plant to ripen and when you see them srtarting to split open then you can harvest them and sow some into a good quality compost.
@ethan.s7219
@ethan.s7219 7 жыл бұрын
It's recommend that you cut off the seed pods because it will take alot of energy out the bulb and the main way lilies propagate themselves in nature is by reproducing by the bulbs if you dig up the bulbs after flowering you can find 4 things about 5-6 bulbils,splitting bulbs,a bulb that has made 2 complete bulbs, and rarely something you can fine 3 full size bulbs that you planted from one bulb

This has been a horrible spring/early summer for Botrytis in my lily beds. The RHS website says its because it's been cooler and damper than normal in my area. Since the UK typically has that sort of climate anyway, how do you deal with this? This has been VERY discouraging! I have been spraying a fungicide to control it but I'm wondering if I should start spraying my beds as soon as the first shoots start coming up in early spring. If my lilies are all killed off by this I'm giving up gardening (well, not really but I'm gonna be really mad)! Any advice/encouragement would be greatly appreciated.
@vanmeuwenplants
@vanmeuwenplants 7 жыл бұрын
Severity of Botrytis is very much weather dependant. Dont be discouraged - sometimes these things happen! You can reduce the risk by clearing up plant debris that may overwinter the spores. Also, try to improve ventilation between the plants by not overrowding them. More air flow will keep foliage drier and less hospitable for the spores to thrive and spread.

Hello. I have a oriental lily plant someone bought me for mothers day at Walmart, I have it inside but am wondering what the best thing to do with it? Will it last inside ?
@vanmeuwenplants
@vanmeuwenplants 3 жыл бұрын
Oriental lilies are best grown outside as they need plenty of light. They are perfectly hardy so they can live outside all year round. Once they have flowered, just let them die back naturally and then cut back the stems in autumn. Next spring they willl send up new stems arnd start all over again.

themrswanda Hello, Im glad you like our lilies - they really are beautiful. Which ones have you ordered? Most are for despatch by end November now so you will be able to pot them up as soon as they arrive and keep them in barely moist compost in a frost free position until late spring. Once all risk of frost has passed then you can plant them out in borders if you wish to.

Video was very nice but I have three queries: (1) My first query is not directly related but I'll be obliged if you answer (perhaps many others watching will also like to know). The vine in the background, just behind you, as soon as the video starts is really beautiful. Can you please tell the name and some tips as to how I may plant it in my garden. (I have only a terrace garden as I don't have ground so can it be grown in an big planter?) (2) You planted 3 lilies in one container. What size is a good size? (We can get some idea looking but not exact). (3) Usually people pot bulbs in soil with a mix of Vermicompost or other fertilizers but you have used only compost, no soil, why? May I use soil mix? If yes what proportion?
@vanmeuwenplants
@vanmeuwenplants 6 жыл бұрын
Hello. The plant growing against the wall is Parthenocissus tricuspidata. It is a vigorous grower and therefore not really ideal for a container unfortunately. We must agree though, its a beautiful plant, especially in autumn when the foliage is stunning! The container used for the Lilies is approximately 30-40cm in diameter. We tend to repot our Lilies annually, so they are grown in fresh compost each year. If you intend to leave them in the same pot for several years then I would agree that a 50:50 soil based mix would be preferable.

The stem was sticking about an inch above the surface so I lost the top 3 inches of the whole stem. The bulb itself is undamaged below. Will the "stump" carry on growing? Or will it generate a new stem this year and start again? Or will I have to wait until next year?

I had the same experience. idk why, but last year I bought some lilies and for some dump reason I started them in pots indoors, and brought them outside in like mid march, and the next day 20 cm high shoots were all frost bitten and mushy, so hense they died (the shoots, not the bulb) so I thought that the bulb will be dead too, but I was lazy to dig it out, and so I forgot about it for the whole year, and since it happened last year, now in the same place I see a miracle - those lilies, whose shoots were killed by frost, now are sprouting just fine! all of them! Don't throw away that bulb, leave it in ground, it will grow next year!

We grow beautiful Japanese lilies that smell amazing. When, not if, you get the beetles cup your hand under them and poke them, they will let go and try to hit the ground to hide. You'll catch them and then crush them. When you pick one up they emit a "scream". The brown clumpy cocoon the larva make is actually their excrement they make to protect themselves. Also, especially here in NY, you MUST deer spray your lilies otherwise the deer will 100% find them and chew them down. They are like candy to deer.

@vanmeuwenplants
@vanmeuwenplants 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jackie, it's worth checking around the roots of your lilies to see if any pests such as vine weevil larvae are present. These larvae have voracious appetites and love to eat the fleshy roots of lilies. If no pests are present then it could be a virus or fungal infection causing stunted growth. Lilies infected with these diseases should be thrown away in household waste. Grow new plants in fresh soil or compost as viruses and fungi can persist in the soil for a number of years. We hope this helps.

Hello, you can grow them from seed but why bother! Bulbs will be of flowering age whereas you may have to wait between 3 and 7 years to see them bloom from seed.You can certainly grow lilies in Ontario - they should be fine in a planter by your door. You might want to lift the bulbs in winter though as they may not survive very cold periods.

They will begin to form a bulb in the first full year of growth - but that bulb will take time to reach flowering age. Honestly it depends on the variety - 7 years would be a maximum. Think of the satisfaction you will get have they finally flower though! If it were me, I would grow them in pots somewhere out of the way. In the meantime buy some bulbs, for a more immediate display. Once the seed lilies reach flowering age you can replace (or add to) the bulbs.
