It is kind of bizarre to see Vanna before she became a household name, and i can bet nobody at the time could have ever possibly imagined what was to come just over two years later in late 1982 when she became the new hostess/letter turner on Wheel of Fortune succeeding Susan Stafford. Now she's been with the show for 39 years total combined and forever etched into the upper echelon of game show history. Kind of a shame she didn't make it out of Contestant's Row, but overall one can point to this episode as where things really started out for her.

Justin Middleton. I was born in 1982(October). And I just heard from the internet not too long ago that Vanna White made an appearance on the Price Is Right back in 1980. And I was like, "Huh, WTF"? I'm still very shocked about it. Which I haven't heard anyone at all mentioned Vanna White being on the Price Is Right as a contestant. Good thing that KZbin have showed me this iconic classic, early 80s recording of the Price Is Right with her on it. 2 years before my time. :-)
@justinmiddleton88183 жыл бұрын
@Jim Austin It really is strange and trippy to see this early appearance of Vanna when she was still relatively unknown. Getting the hostess/letter turning position on Wheel in '82 was her big break, and funny how you were born literally right as she was in the middle of doing all that given her audition (among a bunch of other women who also tried out) was in November that year
@jimaustin79573 жыл бұрын
@@justinmiddleton8818 yes, it is very weird/trippy. In other words, very ironic to see that the internet news feed had thrown some unknown info at me. With Vanna White appearing on the Price Is Right back in 1980. And yes, I did heard about her auditioning for her letter turning gig. A month later after I was born. Back then when Wheel of Fortune was a brand new game show during that time frame.
@justinmiddleton88183 жыл бұрын
@Jim Austin Yes, and by that point Pat had been the host for just about a year. Crazy to think he will have been with Wheel for 40 years in a couple months' time. He's already since passed Bob Barker's 35 year run on The Price is Right (out of an impressive 50 year career in television) for longest running host. This now makes him THE longest continuous host of a game show.

The last woman asked twice about the other bids and he said nothing snarky. Vanna asked for a repeat once after being at the podium the entire show and he had a comment about her looks. I think he was more interested in her looks than she was and he was projecting.

For some context, anyone pursuing an acting career in LA, usually their first stop is Central Casting as an extra. In a very few cases, someone EXTREMELY attractive (which Vanna definitely was), may be approached and referred to a talent agency. An old technique for getting their client started is to get them tickets as potential contestants on shows like TPIR. The client, given their ticket and told to wear a particular color, or something noticeable to stand out. Producers screen the crowds before the tapping on the lookout for individuals they've been told will be in attendance. It's no coincidence that she was in the first group called, and yes, they choose positive excited people as well as attractive referee's. Justine Bateman was on a skit of "Candid Camera", when she was about 12 years old.

I was a studio page at CBS in the late 70's. All tickets to any of the show tapings were free but first come first to be seated according to the capacity of the studio avg around 300. We pages had to turn away many, many people who had tickets. That was the hardest part. For TPIR, the people outside, who had been in line for 2 or 3 hours already, would then be lined up 4 abreast and the producer and 2 associates would go down the line and he would say hello and a word or two to every person. He had signals that the assistants knew and they recorded the names that he wanted. I was one who wrote their names on their tags actually. It was a a great and fun job. What memories.

Ouch! "You know you're so busy looking at yourself on the monitor, you don't know what's going on." Sometimes Bob Barker said things that was a bit rude. I don't think she was looking at herself but rather trying to see the bids. However I enjoyed watching him on, "The Price is Right". Vanna pretty then and pretty now. She has made a great career for herself.

Damn, what a pivotal moment in history for Vanna captured on camera. Without this selection of being a contestant, she would never have been noticed by the show producers for Wheel (they would review footage for on-camera attraction) and would have lead a completely different life, not to mention the dynamic duo of Pat Sajak on Wheel may have never been. If she had just slept-in that day, decided to go shopping or some other activity, or just decided it wasn't worth her time is all it would have taken.
