As a Mexican, I'm so thankful for telling your experiences in my country. Unfortunately our country is perceived as dangerous and full of narcos because of the way media talks about these issues. I've been living here all my life and literally no one that I've known has experienced anything related to narcos. People do get robbed, but that happens if you expose yourself, like walking around late at night on a dangerous area, wearing expensive jewelry or something that really shows off, but that could happen to you anywhere else as well. And honestly it is so rare that things like that happen to tourist, that when it happens, it becomes big news, people are upset and everyone talks about it. We love tourists and really appreciate them for being interested in knowing our country and it's culture, to the point that we feel compromised to protect them in a certain way and making them feel like home. If we know you're a foreigner we always look up for you, and if you have a problem or doubt we try to help you as much as we can. So feel free and safe to come to Mexico and bring your family we have so much to offer and you'll make amazing connections with people all around the globe.

Hey Van, I'm a Mexican 19 year old guy that recently moved to the Netherlands to study my degree, your videos have been a force of motivation since I've been her. I wanted to tell you my story of Puerto. One of my best friends from elementary school, Jonas, once told me I HAAAD to go to Puerto, tu surf and just vibe there for a while (atm I was around 14/15). I convinced my grandpa and my dad to go there for holly week vacation. The moment I got there, I just fell in love with everything that place is, the food, the people, the town. Unfortunately my friend passed away 2 weeks ago, he had some addiction problems, but Puerto will always be that place that remembers me of him, he is a free spirit and I know for a fact, that Jo is surfing la punta waves in this exact moment, I will always visit Puerto thinking of him, he taught me so many things, it was a shame I couldn't go with him. I understand what you mean, Mexico really is a magic place.

Had a similar experience with the bioluminescent algae. In 2017 I travelled to Nicaragua with the plan to spend 2-3 months in central- and south america surfing. One evening in Nicaragua I met these shady drunk locals that had gathered the few tourist that were there. They wanted to show us a local elderly protecting and guarding baby turtles down the beach. We agreed to join them and followed them into the pitch black. We soon arrived at a river with quite the current as the ocean came in. No bridges and we had to cross it by foot in neck deep water. As it was pitch black everyone just got naked and held their clothes over the head. When we entered the water suddenly everyone lit up. It was so bright I could almost see the naked body of the girl in front of me. Surreal moment, and the anxiety people had to cross the river just disappeared. After the river we walked for a bit and found the old man in a beach shack guarding over baby turtles. Crystal clear star-night, with waves breaking in bioluminescent algae. The local drunks didn't even ask for money. They just wanted to show us. Will never forget that night. Two days later I got a phone-call from home in Norway. One of my best friends had taken his own life. I've never felt so helpless. Being alone on the other side of the planet. From the highest high to the lowest low. Ended up traveling home for the funeral, and right after, our whole friend-group went to Bali for a month to spend time together. Now 5 years later I'm soon done with my masters degree, and the only thing i can think about is finally getting the time, and money, to travel back to central america and continue the trip that got cut short.

Great essay, much more a narrative journey - shades of Spalding Gray - (with the mystical tones of Swimming to Cambodia) than your previous Spirited Man episodes. I like it! At 14 years old I was taken on a similar overland journey through Mexico and came to feel about the country much as you do. I went back several times - and noticing your having highlighted it on the map - including a high school summer session in Saltillo. Then, at 20 years old, a week-long love affair with a sales clerk in Guadalajara. I do miss México!!!

Not every video…but at least 1/3 a major point will be something I was just thinking about. Even just referencing something. Like I put a bunch of Vonnegut novels I never read in an online cart and he talks about Breakfast of Champions the next video. It’s bizarre and makes me so ecstatic.

Mexicans we cant think of the so called magic of our country cause we are tired of thinking how the basic rights are completly erased by a failed state. Were living the worst violence to the women who are being kidnapped and killed everyday. The state tells lies everyday at the news, one of mexico City metro lines fall down Killing people and the Governor blame the company that made the checking inform they had an agénda just to blame her when it was obvious to anyone that the metro didnt had maintence. I mean even if we live here its so hard to be mexican knowing all of this, you know the president? He makes daily press conferences where he says the journalists who investigate and Wanna tell all this truths are against him, and you know here we have no mass shootings but in this country they kill a journalist or a human rights defender everyday week.
