Not a fan of this format. It takes the thrill of competition out of the equation. If they keep it like that, Kelly will make history as the winner of the last real Pipe Masters imo.
@richardforee13422 жыл бұрын
Aloha! I see a potentially huge problem lurking. If Pipe gets perfect, dreamy conditions in the 3-6 ft range, especially early in the period, then there will be lots of 9+'s. And what happens if Pipe then goes to 8-12 ft solid on the last day or two, with maybe less than perfect conditions? The best scores possible will again be 9-10's, and this is a travesty because surfing a 10ft Pipe wave is ten times more difficult than a perfect 5 footer! This contest may be won early in the event with several great rides in smaller, very user-friendly surf, with no rewards for those who wind up charging BIG, BRUTAL, LIFE-THREATENING Pipe! I hope this doesn't happen! Any thoughts anyone? Aloha!

@richardforee13422 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielpereyron Nothing personal, but you're wrong. Many Pipe Masters over the past 40 years have been held in smaller surf and many, many surfers were getting 9's. In Medina's 1st Masters contest, in his heat against Shane Dorian, in 5-10 ft surf, Medina got two 9+'s on 5 footers!!! You don't know what you're talking about! Nothing personal. Aloha!
@gabrielpereyron2 жыл бұрын
@@richardforee1342 yes, you're right, but now the rules changed. They gonna have to leave room in the scale for when it gets gnarly. And other point is that every surfer is going to surf 3 heats so they can enjoy every pipe mood. Aloha !

So it’s NOT a CT contest?
@ronnyron69392 жыл бұрын
No. The CT event is still the Billabong Pipe Pro slated as the first event of the 2022 CT schedule starting at the end of Jan.
@Zozo4-u9w2 жыл бұрын
@@ronnyron6939 so basically the Vans Pipe Pro became the Pipe Masters?
@ronnyron69392 жыл бұрын
@@Zozo4-u9w What happened was the Volcom Pipe Pro's holding period got taken by the CT event sponsored by Billabong, the Billabong Pro Pipeline, and the Volcom Pipe Pro is no longer an event. Billabong’s contract as the title sponsor of the Pipe Masters ran out in 2021. The WSL and Vans own the intellectual property rights to the Pipe Masters name. They couldn't swing a deal/contract with Billabong so Billabong renamed that CT event to the Billabong Pro Pipeline. The Vans Pipe Masters is an entirely new event. It is sanctioned by the WSL so CT surfers are able to compete in the event. The CT event formerly know as the Pipe Masters but now called the Billabong Pro Pipeline is still just a prestigious as when it was called the Pipe Masters. It's still a CT event and there will still be the "Pipe Trials" where Hawaiian surfers can surf their way into the event and even win the CT event like Jamie O'Brien did in 2004 or when Johnny Boy Gomes won it as a wild card in 1997.
@Zozo4-u9w2 жыл бұрын
@@ronnyron6939 well I would argue that stripping the Masters title away from the CT event makes it less prestigious imo. We are talking about a legacy stemming from the Lopez area, a traditional crowning of the best Pipe surfer. Could be interesting though to include non CT surfers in the mix, although this new format looks much less thrilling than the traditional event. I only watched bits and pieces of the Volcom event last year, when this format was introduced.

The more I listen the confused I am. Am I excited or is this joke not funny. Hawaiians taking the most prestigious event that used to be for everyone and making it a joke by making it Hawaiians vs “blow ins” and “misfits”. If a Hawaiian wins….well gee of course they did, the comp is mostly Hawaiian s. If a “blow in” or “misfit” wins, we’ll….how pathetic. I don’t see how a Hawaiian can be proud about that win. Call a fellow competitor a blow in or misfit and they best you? That’s a joke. How that’s good for the sport I don’t know. As for format I’m excited. I’m kinda surprised we don’t have the racist police having sn issue with this though ha

There’s all this talk, but what’s the actual objective Vans is trying to achieve? There’s too many components to figure out what Vans thinks all these rules and standards are going to achieve. If Hawaiians are perpetually worried about representation, and Vans feels they have to cater to that sentiment, why doesn’t Vans just do an all Hawaiian event and be done with it? Segregation is the new desegregation anyways. And why are people who don’t surf Pipe, as good as they are, going to be able to do things out at Pipe, that none of the best Hawaiians who surf there all the time, haven’t already done? It just seems like wishful thinking and a lot of marketing hype to me; a pipe dream. Pipe itself dictates what can be done. It always has, always will. You ain’t gonna air from inside a barrel, and, you ain’t gonna avoid the barrel, and skip it altogether, to air. We’ve seen airs after coming out, not new. We’ve seen carves after coming out, also not knew. Not sure why Vans thinks there’s all these other options we just haven’t seen yet. I feel like society is constantly bent on trying to turn things that aren’t into things that are. Pipe isn’t gonna just change its form even if humans pretend that different swell direction makes it a JBay, a Lowers, a Snapers, or any other wave. Pipe is Pipe is Pipe. It doesn’t need humans projecting new identity assignments upon it to validate its existence as it is, and that’s what it feels like. It feels like one big woke catering event whereby $$$$ is used to pay people to accept the delusions. What’s new. 🙄🙄
