Shipping containers are great for tiny houses - but make sure to get a Hi-Cube. Also remember that if you're in a colder climate, you'll have to add insulation to all four sides. At a bare minimum that means that you'll end up with no more than 7'3" interior width (4" insulation and 1/2" wall cover). Don't cut too many holes in it or you'll lose structural integrity. Again, if you live in a colder climate, you have to account for snow loads. And don't forget about the foundation, septic or gray water service, etc. etc. Not meaning to be a Debbie Downer but do your research and maybe talk to someone who's built them before or even an architect and engineer.

Also insulation is not only for cold I know I live in a 63ft x 7ft narrowboat. Remember it’s a big metal box.

They are in Joshua Tree. From May to June the temperatures are “sweltering .”Insulation just as important there. Wish we knew what the temperature was during their visit. Also those beautiful windows must have been double paned. It has to be the “off season ”. It’s been a very warm winter this year.

As an architectural designer, I recommended you go with a pre-fabricated shipping container that has perforations (doors, windows, mechanical units, etc) already designed. You can customize the interior to your liking based on where those elements are located. Because the containers are made of steel they are definitely strong, but once you start putting the perforations the structural side of things can get not only complicated, but also very costly as you will need to hire professionals to create drawings for code reviewal. A pre-fabricated model will come with things like the appropriate insulation, drawings, and systems to make for an easier process. There are many manufacturers doing this sort of thing because containers are trendy~ and while the cost may seem high, if you start with a container's bare bones you may end up spending a lot to get it to a point of being habitable and enjoyable! Good luck and I cannot wait to see what you all are able to achieve in your future endeavors. I live for these renovation and adaptive reuse projects so I will be tuning in for a long time!

Garage doors are only great in climates that don't have bugs. If you have mosquitos you'd never open them. Put in a tall series of windows that feel like a window wall but you can open them and they'll have screens. Same effect but no bugs. 😉✌

We bought a cottage on the North Shore of N.S. and put a glass garage door on the water side of the garage. That’s where we spend a lot of our time . Great place to watch a thunder storm. Come visit sometime!

I noticed you mentioned a propane fridge at your cabin, and I just wanted to let you know that you can totally run a regular electric fridge (freezer on top is the most efficient I have found) on solar. We have a fridge and deep freeze on solar, and we don't have a crazy expensive system. We'll have a vid on it at some point on our build. Happy travels 😊

If you go with the garage door at the cabin, there is a garage screen door you can add to it. The screen also has a door built into it so you can go in and out with ease while keeping the bugs out and the breeze flowing.

Love the garage door idea. If you want one in the cabin you could have external sliding or bi-fold doors on the outside of it in winter, could even be lift off, depending on the weight of the insulation. The whole cabin is well laid out and a fantastic situation.

What a fun little shipping container! That cold pool must have been reallly cold 🥶! It’s getting into the low 30s Fahrenheit (about 0 Celsius) at night here. I’m so glad you were aware of the coyotes. And kept the puppies safe. They are hungry and thirsty. We haven’t had much rain this year. Safe travels to Mexico 🇲🇽
