I’m doing a modded 10% science run right now and I’m amazed how engaging it made the game! I’m actually planning missions now, perfecting designs, running multiple missions, optimising everything!…and because of that I’m actually more connected to my kerbals, missions and designs. I feel encouraged to make mission patches, give unique names to particularly successful crafts…and in general having the time of my life with KSP

Yeah I started a standard hard mode to get back into it, and I like it. It’s not horridly challenging while still requiring you to be resourceful and cautious of your funds and what tech you unlock, cause you can soft-lock yourself if you start carelessly launching shit and killing your pilots/burning through cash. It’s even more fun if you don’t cheese the KSC biomes for boatloads of initial science.

Yeah me too. I started a "default settings" hard mode career after VAOS made a few episodes. Not brave enough for 10% science (60% is hard enough for me at this point) but its going well so far. And having fun with it!

You're almost there! Drop tanks are extremely useful in SSTO's as well, if you want a long range SSTO say capable of going to Mars and back in KSRSS

With that said, extremely wide wing and short tail lets craft wiggle left-right as you experienced as well, think it as a triangle. Have you tried double wing to reduce the width of the wings and pack them in half the width? Like those farmer planes.. I usually reduce wingspan too when making extreme lightweight crafts but you'll figure something out I'm sure bro Just remember, any wings will add drag, I think vertical wings are unnecessary drag if plane can keep flight straight by its own, and you can check in f-12 menu->aerodynamics->'show aero in action menus", then you right-click on part to see lift/drag of each part. If you do it well, juno can reach upto 730m/s at mid-altitude and about 450m/s at above 18k

try to take a little less fuel to save fuel during takeoff, do not gain speed more than 300 m/s (1 mach) or until white stripes appear (more speed = more resistance(in real life)) and try putting the landing gear in front 1 behind 2, this will help with braking

Giving me an idea for a feature in any successor to KSP: The ability to make custom engines so you can "optimize engine for altitude" so it kinda sucks lower (so it feels better and isn't super OP when you do something like this, and as a bit of a realistic balance feature), but then when you get to the altitude it's designed for, it picks up a bit compared to default. Have it cost extra for balance, maybe wears out parts quicker, whatever. It's a fun idea.

You can do this with 4 Junos (3 is enough for 18km but with 4 you can hit 21km) and in the weight, dimension and part count restrictions for only tier 1 Hangar/Runway Fuselage = Mk1 Cockpit + Tail Connector A 2x AV-R8 Winglets as Canards and 2x Delta Deluxe Winglets as Tail Fins/Rear Wings with one more AV-R8 as a rudder Place 4x Small Circular Intake + Mk0 Liquid Fuel Fuselage + Junos at the rear, 2 above the rear Delta Deluxe Winglets and 2 Below (I use Mirror symmetry for each pair rather than 4x Radial) and adjust to make sure they’re horizontal LY-05 landing gear in front and 2x LY-01 in the rear (attached to the lower Junos’ fuel tanks) as a tricycle configuration Adjust COM/COL as needed by sliding the canards/engine assemblies a teeny bit Congrats! You’ve got yourself a Starfighter (with Canards) rather than a U2, it can fly at 600ms+ and you can use zoom climbs to break 21km in altitude pretty consistently Because of the speed it’s already got great range, but if you want to increase it you can add a Mk1 liquid fuel tank in the middle and, once you’ve consumed enough fuel to get the weight back down, get basically the same altitude performance

I have no idea how this planes work in ksp: Do airbreathing engines die because they run out of intake oxidiser? If so, could you get some higher performance at higher altitute by putting more intakes per engine? Not putting more Intake+Fuel+Engine Assemblies, but just more Intakes to offset the lower amounts of air.

that used to be the case ('airhogging' was iirc incredibly effective in some very early days of ksp, able to get jets functioning all the way up to the edge of space), but is no longer. in almost all cases, you'll hit the jet's set air pressure limit for functioning before you run out of air
