Maybe with cargo in the back the engines could be placed on a sliding track by using two pistons that extend and contract in unison, this way when the cargo is unloaded the engines could be shifted into a new position to match the CoM.

I try to avoid pistons and just use variable throttle instead. I'll have 2 engines in back at full power and 1 in the back that I adjust the thrust limiter on. Basically, I figure out where the CoM is in the extreme cases by draining fuel and adding/removing cargo. The 2 aft engines are put in line with that rear CoM. Then I work on placing the fore engine. I move the CoM forward and move that engine until I don't have torque. After that, I set up a KAL and have it toggle play/play backward on 9, and toggle play /play forwards on 0.

On the mention that KSP content creators might be a dying breed, a lot of people got burned by KSP 2 being rushed out so early, and by Take Two closing the studio. I don't really follow other KSP channels besides yours. But for what it's worth, you've hooked me with these amazing designs. :) Firefly was a pretty big ship, and this feels like a predecessor, where they were still experimenting if there was a demand for such a design. At 8:55 next to that sleek warship it really looks like an old ship that's been given a shiny coat of paint so some schmuck would still think it's flyable. :D

I would imagine a large cargo bay in the center with a crew module in the back and a front cockpit. This could have a column of mk1 crew cabins on the sides of the cargo bay to make a connection between, but honestly you could just pretend the cargo bay is pressurized.

It may be a dumb idea, but what if the cargo would stay in the 'middle'? Basically the "pickup" thing, but move the engines more in the back. I mean, I absolutely love the way it ended up looking, but it may be just a bit wierd having to transport the same ammount of cargo for both front and rear to keep it balanced. What I've done with at least two sets of VTOL engines is bind the thrust limiters on the forward and rear to axis control groups for trim. It isn't ideal, but it does allow balance changes to be compensated for.

TAC VTOL (Or TAC Autobalance) does exactly what you are looking for. However ironically - it wouldn’t work very well on the craft you presented in this video. You already have your engines and center of mass lined up more or less permanently for this craft and TAC wouldn’t do much for it. What TAC is REALLY good for is balancing thrust on craft that have VTOL engines forward and aft as well as in the center and on the sides. Imagine Thunderbird 2 if you can create a craft like that (and I personally have) then TAC can be programmed or even tweaked on the fly to account for unbalanced loads that are not perfectly centered as long as you have extra “perimeter” engines. Also - TAC can make do with a set of MISMATCHED engines that all have different power maximums and outputs! If I recall correctly it can even calculate a suicide burn solution for ALL of the above configurations! And - like Kerbal Engineer it can be set up to run without any extra parts. So your craft can still remain technically “stock”. I recommend it highly. It’s been a few years since I’ve actively done anything with KSP but I remember being quite impressed with TAC at the time. I wager it’s only become more refined since then!

​@@DistracticusPrime Indeed. I made a Thunderbird-1 which could do the classic vertical take-off and horizontal landing. But the horizontal VTOL landing was ONLY possible with TAC. I should also mention for VAOS benefit - that TAC MIGHT go some way towards solving the thrust balance issues on the GIANT cargo ships that he wants to build - as well as assist in atmospheric flight for the Star Trek inspired ships and shuttles we've seen before.

you could have the cockpit and crew quarters up front by having an extra (likely vacuum-optimized) engine in the rear as a counterbalance, then put the CoM in the middle of the cargo bays

While she can't carry much, what she can do is (on paper) land pretty much anywhere it can fit. Now, that's a recipe that works wonders for emergency situations like S&R and Rapid Evac. On that note, there should be a version, where she can carry more people than just the pilots & Co.

TAC the fuel balancing mod or TCA throttle controlled avionics will automatically vtol your craft with odd engine symmetry I use it for a few things

Also, since you mention Eve, how would you build an SSTO that can land there? That planet's kicking my butt even with conventional rockets, I'm curious how you'd manage an SSTO mission there. SSTO to Eve is hard as fk. I’ve done it before but it wasn’t worth it. It’s a combination of propellers (to get out of thick atmo) and Rockets. This makes the ssto 99% mostly fuel tanks. Not very useful for cargo or passengers. Im sure cargo or passenger eve ssto it could be done but it would take forever to design. Not really worth it. 🤔

vaos can you try making a space gun? ive been using rhino engines (highest thrust single nozzle liquid engine) to fling stuff (that has a heat shield facing the rocket) into the air (and occasionally space)

VTOL SSRTS are awesome, in fact your vtol ssto videos inspired me to make this very capable lander, which was designed to be able to land and make orbit again on almost every body in the solar system (exept kerbol, jool, eve, and tylo needs like a sort of boost stage to help it delta v wise)

Oh BTW Vaos - You might want to check and see if there's two completely separate TAC mods. If I recall correctly - I think one is a *throttle module* that balances engine thrust - and the other is just as important - a *fuel balancer* that auto-balances the fuel load across tanks inside the craft so as to maintain the center of mass in one spot as much as possible!

also a cool thing you can do with vtol sstos, is especially for interplanetary ones, a thing I do is that you can go into vtol mode while aerobraking to capture, that way you can use both methods at the same time, (if needed)

The only mod I would install is a Vaos voice mod, Using something like Voice attack, and when someone speaks out "Raise landing gears." Vaos speaks up and says something like. "Why don't you do it yourself? you ain't going to learn nothing if you force me to do it every time, but just this once ill do it." Then it does the Gear keybind. Or Set trim to 25Degrees, voice attack Vaos voice once again, "Which button was it again? the red one or green one? ahhhh f*ck it.... presses a random button." but it does the command. i'd no joke would use voice attack if i had a voice to bitch at Vaos to do the task given. This would 100% be my mod, and only mod. it would also be a funny video you using a Vaos Voice attack on your own game where you're talking to yourself to do the commands for you haha. Vaos speaks, Vaos!! Voice attack speaks in Vaos voice, "Yes master! what can i do for you?" Vaos speaks, did you stowaway the snacks? Voice attack speaks in Vaos Voice, "mumbles words as if his mouth is full speaks out Yes master all the food is stowed inside me... COUGH!! i mean stored away where it should be, master captain sir/mama. Edit: You can even get other actors voices to play in part but i would truly love to have my own Vaos voice.
