@@azborderlands: Spanish and Mexican cultures keep, up to this day, permeating American culture, that is a fact, and there's a reason for that: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, part of Wyoming, part of Oregon, Part of Kansas and part of Oklahoma were for over 300 years part of Spain and Mexico... Don't let that upset you, because you can't erase those 300 years of history.

The Cowboy👢🐴 culture has its origin in northern Mexico 🇲🇽 The creators of this art were the Mexicans, (not the US-Americans) the modern Cowboy was born in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, then the Mexicans raised cattle in the current area of Texas, when it was Mexican territory, before the annexation to the United States , the lifestyle, work, clothing, dance, were immediately imitated by the US-Americans, after the annexation of the territory of Texas. California also had skilled men on horseback, according to Richard Henry Dana, who wrote a book about that region in 1840 when it still belonged to Mexico. As described: When they make long trips, they ride one horse until they get tired and grab another, go over the support and bridle and, after running off the animal, take a third and so on until the end of the trip. There are no better cowboys like the Mexicans in the world.

Mexico had three types of Cowboy culture, coming with the same Spanish lineage but a bit different from each other. The northern vaquero (cowboy) originated in Chihuahua and the states of the north (Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Tamaulipas) and Texas. This is the vaquero that the American Cowboy learned and originated from. The Charro, was the high-class vaquero, the right hand of the "patron," the hacendado. They will wear a wider felt sombrero and more elegant clothing. They originated in central Mexico, Hidalgo, Zacatecas, Jalisco, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, and finally, the Californio. The vaquero from the far Baja California peninsula, Sonora and la Alta California. They had a more traditional Spanish influence, which can be seen in their clothing, but, ultimately, in their own Mexican culture. I don't think Californios exist nowadays, at least not they way they used to. They disappeared shortly after the Anglo-American invasion. There are some still in Baja California and Sonora, they don't use the same traditional attire as in the old ways (at least not too often from what I have seen) or the flat brim sombreros but still ride with chaparreras "chaps" and mules "mule" as in the old way.

Since the XVI century the Spanish Crown had in the New Spain (today’s Mexico) a kind of soldiers called in Spanish SOLDADOS DE CUERA or hard leather soldiers who were skilled horsemen and fought riding a horse using a very long spear (about ten feet long) and they wore a hard leather breastplate, these soldiers were the forebears in the New Spain of Mexican CHINACOS or LANCEROS (Lancers) who were also skilled horsemen and worked in Mexican Haciendas and Ranchos tending to cattle and taming wild horses, and during the French Invasion fought against the French invaders using long spears, sabers and a reata (lasso), and these were the forebears of the current Mexican VAQUEROS (later called cowboys in the American Southwest) in Northern Mexico and of the Mexican CHARROS in Central and Western Mexico. Today these horsemen are called Vaqueros and Charros in Mexico. American cowboys learned the skills from Novohispanos/Mexican Vaqueros who were already seasoned Vaqueros around 300 years before American cowboys came into existence…

These are known as charros which is one of the kind of horse cultures I grew up to know. But even a true charro will tell you that only cowboys work the land and work with cattle and other livestock on the backs of their horses. In my small town of Oak view there are real cowboys there who’ve worked cattle and the land for more than 4 generations. So I guess the title should be the Real Charros of California.
