The rumour about it being a bootleg probably came about because for the SNES version (the original) Wisdom Tree didn't actually pay the license to Nintendo, who probably refused to license the game because of their very strict avoidance of anything religious at the time.

I think you should play more Christian games. They're all so weird and terribly bad. This game was originally on the SNES. In 1995 it was ported to MS-DOS. Didn't get a Steam release until 2015. Super Noah's Ark 3D, I shit you not, started development as a game based on the movie Hellraiser. Wisdom Tree paid $50,000 for the license and started developing the game for the NES, incorporating "a special cartridge that came equipped with a co-processor that could increase the system's RAM and processing speed several times over." This Hellraiser game was eventually dropped due to, essentially, feature creep and then repurposed into the masterpiece you see before you now. It remains the only unlicensed SNES game to get a commercial release during the system's lifespan.
