In between the DIY method with your pulley upgrade and the rikon vs already built out the box sander what would you choose because the price seems to be similar one just requires me to do a little thinking 🤣

@@simpleforging3339 In past videos I saw it being used. I like this myself as more versatile and uses less immediate space. meaning can move display. HFT 1x30 still is at around $60+/-. do the upgrades might be slightly more but I'd think is well worth it. Now to get some OT at work to buy this stuff.

@@soullessone_edc6226 Apologies for not catching the question above sooner. They are both functional options, just with a different list of +/-. If you want the hassle free but bulkier route the Rikon out of box is still good. The custom motor replacement, gives digital speed control, reverse, etc.

So my old HF 1x30 has a new life in my sharpening shop what a game changer this upgrade is simply awesome. I use it mostly for stropping with leather and Diamond Sprays, but I can also use Scotch Brite Belts now and the control with the speed control is one of the best DIY upgrades I have ever done and the wheel kit from Cliff is fantastic! Probably going to add another one soon to my shop.

I have a hf 1x30 that I have made many knives with in the stock configuration. It is now pretty much worn out. I will be doing this upgrade if I can find that motor and controller. I was going to mount the drive wheel to pillow blocks and use step pulleys to slow the belt speed down, but this is an attractive option. The economy of the 1x30 belts cannot be beat imo which makes spending money on mods make sense. Thank you for this video.

Lolol ! I bought wheels from you last year and modified my HF grinder with the exact same sewing machine motor and speed control! It's a great little sharpener but stalls easily if attempting to grind knives like the big grinders do. But, it is my go to for sharpening. I use trizac 600 and 1000 grit with water spray, one heck of a nice combo for serious sharpening! I upgraded to homebuilt Revolution 2x72 grinder but will always use the HF for sharpening, it's just to easy and a nice setup! Thanks for sharing, your a very kind and generous man!

This video was worth watching just for the V.S Consew motor link - that unit has endless possibilities. People who do metal fab will be disregarding the old "arm" - it just looks like junk. A new steel mount/arm will be getting made in a lot of peoples heads.. I.E you only need the Consew motor with a drive wheel & a suitable idler - not the original sander. The original sander is kinda irrelevant.. Really good, informative video.

Hey Cliff thanks for the great tips on modifying the Harbor Freight 1/30 I wasn't having much luck with the Sandpaper trick on the main Drive wheel so I actually took one of my skew chisels from my turning tools and I rested it on the front bottom part of the housing then held it steady and shaved away the high spots that were making it so out of round that you can see the other idler belt Wheels vibrating now everything turns nice and smooth

Got the new motor installed, no problems. The only problem I'm having right now is when I removed the spring from the speed controller lever theres not enough tension to keep the lever in a set position, it just slips right down to the off position right away? Did you do anything to yours to make it stay in a "ON" position you move it to?

I picked up the Consew motor and have a bunch of your stuff on order - waiting on the drive wheel. The motor seems to work great, but I need to add some friction to the speed control arm to get it to stay in place. It moves under its own weight and gets worse with the vibration of the machine. Any tips? Thanks!!
@CurryCustomCutlery
@CurryCustomCutlery Жыл бұрын
I emailed you back to address that issue. The speed control arm attaches to a small rotating shaft and it needs to be attached with more friction to the body. Remove and add a spacer washer or some way to get it to press against something.

Great video as usual. I live in the UK, where getting a 1 x 30 was difficult enough and spares would be even more difficult and tax and shipping from the US is now too expensive. I have been thinking about trying some pallet truck (I think you call them pump truck) wheels to build a grinder (possibly 2"). The larger guide wheels as a drive wheel and the rollers as idler wheels. You can even get crowned wheels. I really can't afford to waste the money trying it as an experiment, so I thought I'd ask your opinion as you have developed some expertise in these matters. Thanks

Great little video the information is perfectly presented. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more and hopefully being able to grab some of those upgraded wheels. A rivers experience did a video in regards to a platen upgrade for these machines that everyone should take a look at as well. You could have yourself a sweet little machine with all the different upgrades people have figured out.

toolcker on Amazon one by 30 inch what are they 400 bucks Canadian. Then get a hold of Cliff for his upgrade wheels and Bob’s your uncle. By the way that unit I just mentioned is a variable speed separate unit that comes inclusive.

Is the platen absolutely necessary to operate the sander?
@CurryCustomCutlery

platten is needed if you want to use an angle guide to clip it too. For edge trailing horizontal mode Id say not mandatory to have the platten but nice still to have there.

Great video Cliff, thanks for sharing the process! Will your custom drive wheels fit the standard motor arbor, and if not, are there any potential inserts or adapters available? Just a series of silly questions as I think of all of the things that I could do with those wheel upgrades to the stock drive system alone. Be well.

I have heard that DC motors like this one, because they are open, are susceptible to death due to the ingress of dust/debris. Has anybody found this to be true? Is anybody using a method to prevent this? Perhaps a filter?

help me understand why I couldn’t just source out maybe a little more expensive variable speed one by 30. To go through all that work Brother I guess I know man there’s a lot of guys out there that would do all that. I just wouldn’t do that with a $30 Harbour Frieght

Back in my day....seriously when I started there was no variable or slow speed option, so I designed and had the parts created to build my own then shared that with others. Now there are out of box options but there still are not Digital speed controlled with Forward/Reverse so there is something for everyone. Cheers

Alot of these options are 2nd level upgrades to an existing frame/platform that is cheap but very functional.

@@CurryCustomCutlery I say new frame because its mainly a 50cm-100cm long 5cm wide and 0.6cm- 1.5cm thick slab of mild steel And this is a hell lot more heavy and if you attach the wheels and everything else right it will be a hell lot more rigid But a new motor over a new frame is probably a bit better
