What I've come to realize about algebra is, the more you try and understand it or add logic to it, the more you will struggle with it. You have to memorize the language and just chug along....

is it not confusing to write c^3 as ccc. and 4x as xxxx? It is better to write 4x as 4 x's as follows: x x x x, then there is a clear difference between the two notations. By the way: "not like terms" are called unlike terms in math.

No, 3a would not be a cubed because 3a represents as “a + a + a” or “a” multiplied by 3 Here’s an example If “a” = 5 You would do 5+5+5 That would be 3 fives So it’s the same thing as 5 multiplied by 3 So 3a = 3 · 5 An example of what cubed is, let’s say your cubing 3 That would be 3 · 3 · 3 Instead of adding it would be multiplying Hope that helped!
