In this segment, I'll try to demystify the differences between Variegated, Self-Striping and Ombre yarns. When to use them, how they work into a garment, and what is best to use for different types of projects.

New subscriber here. Even though i have been crocheting for years, i never have used the kind of yarns you described. I just started buying them and thank you for explaining the various uses for them!

Hi Bethany! Welcome to my channel! :) Oh I started with variegated and Ombre, so I've only just starting realizing the beauty of solid colors, lol! :) I am thrilled that you found value in this video. If I could offer a suggestion, start of with 1 skein of a variegated or self striping you FALL IN LOVE WITH and make something beautiful for yourself (like a cowl or scarf). ;) XX Kim

Hi Jessie! First of all...WELCOME!! Thank you so much for being here and subscribing! We try to have a lot of fun!! Thank you for liking my "babe cave"...it's definitely my sanctuary! I will take you up on your suggestion for an air cleaner...some of my yarns...WHEW...make me sneeze the entire time! As far as your friend goes...that's a tough one! I've had people ask me to make items for them and they supply their own yarn. If they don't know what they are purchasing, (weight, styles of yarn, types of fibre) it can be really hard (read impossible) :) to give them the finished product. I think your right in making smaller balls to get the colors to match, you just may have knots through your project. Thank you so much for your comment...and for subscribing! Lots more fun to come! First of all, I love your video corner! Such a pretty setup from the wall to the angle of the camera. Secondly may I suggest an air cleaner at your corner for the fuzz battle. It'll vacuum them right out of the air. And third, I have a lady who wants me to make a lot of slippers for her family as gifts. She bought her own yarn. I have now learned variegated, striped and ombre are definitely not the same. It's hard to get a matching pair together. I have to make the skeins into smaller balls of yarn. So now I know for future reference stripes and ombres are for bigger projects! Thanks for the video!💝

Although this was informative, I think the beauty lies in the of the craftsman, not everyone has the same taste and I feel that if you really see a specific pattern in variegated, then go for it! Sometimes, even as you remarked a bit of solid for contrast can also make the difference.

So the way you have explained all multi colored is self stripping. I have for about 60 yrs known variegated yarn as. A mixed up jumble of colors. I am so tired of self stripping yarn. I love to knit socks and I'm getting tired of strips.
@beautyandthebritwilliams9027
@beautyandthebritwilliams9027 8 ай бұрын
Hi! Well, I would say that "self striping" is different from variegated because there is a pattern with self striping (ie lines, blocks of color etc.). Whereas with variegated, it can be just a color change through out the yarn strand which would bring about more depth and definition in the yarn, than just a solid. I guess I could say that self striping yarns are a type of variegation, but not all variegated yarns are self striping. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your insightful comments! :) XX Kim

Hi Doris, thank you for your comment! You know, it's funny but I get MORE COMMENTS just like yours on this video than any other!!! I have been scratching my head trying to remember where I got the pattern from and honestly it was so long ago, I think I actually got it from the label. The yarn is Caron Cakes "Big Cakes" and I think the pattern was on the inside of the label. I even think my son took the blanket with him so I can't even look at the stitch, lol! I know it was a Yarnspirations Pattern, so I'm including the link to their patterns here. www.yarnspirations.com/patterns?pmin=0.01&prefn1=brand&prefv1=Caron&prefn2=fiber&prefv2=Acrylic&prefn3=patternProjectType&prefv3=Afghans%20%26%20Blankets&prefn4=patternSkillTypeString&prefv4=Crochet&prefn5=yarnWeightRefinement&prefv5=%234%20Worsted%20%28Medium%29&start=144&sz=24 XX Kim

Hi, thank you for this. I love that you show examples in finished projects. I was wondering, when making a project that uses more than 1 skein, does it matter how you join the next skein? I.e. start one skein from the middle, and from the outside? Try to match the colors? Hope that makes sense.
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains Жыл бұрын
Hi Eunique! What a great question! When joining colors, it depends on a few things. First of all, you would have to see how much of the colour you are ending with has already "pooled," because you may not want a large pool of the same colour that may stand out in your finished project. I usually will find the I want to continue with or transition over to, and there may be some cutting involved to get the desired effect. Sometimes, I enjoy "going with the flow," as it were to see where the colors take me. That's the beauty of creating... it's a work of art in the making! Thank you for subscribing!! XX Kim

what do you know about assigned pooling yarn?
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains Жыл бұрын
Oh I haven't actually used any "assigned pooling" yarn, but it seems complicated (to create). I know that it's typically created for a specific pattern, so the color changes occur in specific areas, such as a popcorn/bobble stitch to coordinate with a pattern. I've included the link to the one "assigned pooling" that I was really tempted by, but it would have been expensive to make the scarf, www.shop.purplelambfiberarts.com/products/van-goghs-starry-night-assigned-pooling0-indie-dyed-yarn-on-sparkly-merino-sock?variant=43427404382378. What is stitch pattern of son's blanket?
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains Жыл бұрын
Hi! The stitch I used is called a "spike stitch" basically you do a single crochet, and then wrap your hook as if you are doing a dbl crochet but hook down in to the row BELOW. I'll do a tutorial on the stitch! Thanks for subscribing! XX Kim

That blanket is really pretty! What stitch did you use?
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains
@Kimberly_Knit4Brains Жыл бұрын
Hi! Welcome to my channel! :) For the blanket, I just did a simple Treble (triple crochet) "drop down" stitch. You just decide how many stitches (how long) you want your blanket to be, and then you SC across 2 rows. For the next row you TC (treble or triple crochet) INTO the row BELOW the stich and you get this look. I made this blanket so many years ago I don't even know if I have a written pattern, LOL! Let me know if this makes sense. :) And THANK YOU for subscribing to my channel! XX Kim

@@Kimberly_Knit4Brains , thankyou for the thoughtfull comment❣ In my ignorance of Hobbii yarn, i thought i was getting #4 weight yarn but no, its alot thinner. Plus i didnt get enough of the color since its so much thinner. Not sure what i'll use it for but att i didnt have the skill to use such thin yarn (more like string). I do now. I will come up with something, eventually. But i will not order from them again. I like made in america yarn, my first time useing a cone of yarn. Found another in cali but again they have string type yarn as hobbii n im just not a fan of that type of yarn.
