This video is exactly what I needed to understand the capabilities of this unit, thank you for making this! I've been researching what I want in my first eurorack sequencer, and it's been a little tricky to find videos and articles that help me envision how they'll work in my setup and workflow preferences....Prior to watching this, I had already read 2 short articles and watched a different video about this sequencer, and yet I was still wondering what it was like to use the dang thing, lol. Glad I ended up over here. This sequencer is looking like a very promising option for me, actually

Man, the varigate 4+ is super intuitive and great as a hands on module for sequencing and tinkering live. I’ve wanted a good middle ground of control and generative abilities between pams and marbles and this nails it. Fantastic module.

Been doing a ton of research on sequencers and really like the look of the Varigate 4+ for a small case. Sadly, Malekko shut down in January 2024 and will no longer sell or service modules or pedals. Also, it looks like used prices on their gear are going up way faster than other brands. The 4+ was selling for 180 on reverb 5 months ago and it's now going for $240. Here's hoping my used module doesn't have any defects pop up after the Reverb return policy.

The varigate 4+ is like a relationship, it takes time to let things grow, hard work and getting to know the other half every day again.. But when it works out.. It's amazing. Great tutorial btw. I'm still using it after a month of owning the v4+

Yes Jade! Made me feel good about opting for the V4+ as a stand-alone sequencer as opposed to shelling out for the mimetic, a steppy and a scales! Get in the pallette case!!

I use a DAW too, just at the end of my chain though, nothing wrong with that :) And nah its super easy to learn, might take you a few days to remember all the button combinations but after that itll come easy.

4 years old for a vid but still so inspiring and helpful for looking at the varigate 4+. My only worry is that 8 steps wasn’t enough but clearly this isn’t an issue. This may have been covered in the video but does the length of the cv and gate patterns match up for the pairs or do you set length for cv and gate patterns independently?

Sounded like your two notes at 7:40 weren't tuned to an octave but to a fifth. If that's the case, your scale quantization might not be doing what you'd expect. If one voice is effectively quantized to F minor pentatonic and the other to C minor pentatonic (the 5th of F) for example, you'll have Ab in the first and G in the second, which if they occur together will result in some dissonance...

Very nice module, but isn´t it a problem somehow, that the fader position never represents the true value when you switch pages or tracks? Can you change the mode between jump and pick up parameter?

Is there a way to punch in a precise note, meaning, say I want C-A-G in the sequence - I cant even get close although i restricted octave , it is very hard to actually dial in the exact note you want - any suggestions?

Nice video, but if you adjusted the gates first, then changed various parameters in the cv part, how to remember what was done in the gate if moving the sliders "erased" all the previous information? I have the Varigate 4+ and I hope the Voltage Block will arrive soon, but it is difficult to work when the previous thing is "erased".

You don't. It's a unique UI that isn't made for seeing everything you've done in the different modes. Certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea for that reason.

Does holding freeze on the Voltage Block freeze the Varigate 4+ in its current position of its sequence as well if connected to each other? Creating like a stutter step or for drum rolls/build ups?

Hi Jade I have a quick question. I’m trying to sync up my Varigate 4+ with Pamela’s New Workout so that I can make more complex drum patterns and stuff. How would I go about doing that? Clk out of Pam’s into clk in on Varigate does nothing and if I then take the clk out of Varigate into my mixer it goes crazy and just starts blipping nonstop with a weird sound. I just thought if I took clk out of Pam’s into Varigate then the Varigate would just play along the same global tempo as the BPM on Pam’s

Hey John, if you want to set the v4+ as slave you need to change the switches in the back. Take the module out of the case and change the switches, look up the v4+ manual, this info will be at the bottom!

Thanks for the video. Right to the point and got me up and running with the new features of the 4+. I already had a varigate 4, but bought a 4+ for my new drum specific modular.

The 4+ is brill, but I do miss the probability display on the LEDs in gate mode. When you're moving between 4 tracks it's nice to be able to see where the sliders are on any specific track while adjusting them. On the 4+ it plays through them in realtime , which is cool, but bot as useful as the old method.

The LEDs should show brightness based on the CV or Gate level. Maybe there is a setting to switch this?
