You taught an old dog a new trick. But first.... Peom is looking fabulous. I am totally diggin the color of the cockpit soul and foredeck. The gold lettering in her name is really popping with the varnish going on. Now for the trick... I have several pairs of those bar clamps. I have never been immensely impressed with them. They are bulky and don't apply a lot of force. I had never considered (should have read the instructions) reversing the end and clamp on the bar to push as a clamping force. DUH ME. In my defense, I use bar and pipe clamps infrequently. Immediately, several applications, in my work, came to mind. Thank you Peter. 😊
@mySeaPrince_ Жыл бұрын
Also remember if you have several you can put more than one slidy bit on one bar If you can find a piece of metal the right size you can have very long reach with two lever jaws. I've also fixed them temporarily to pieces of wood in various directions ie acoustic guitar.. An even crazier one is putting the two jaws the opposite sides and then use a piece of wood with holes in or a ring of metal (saucepan) or a wooden frame. Hope this helps 😻

Its raining on Lake Erie as well, Peter, also much needed. It will put a damper on the smoke in the air, but also hopefully help with the plague of Cottonwood tree fuzzy seeds we are currently swimming in. Of course it will make my grass grow, and that will require mowing… you remember having to maintain a lawn, I assume? No grass to cut when you live on a boat!

Those little trolling motors are great. I use one on my own dinghy and stealth along the local rivers here. I'm just as happy rowing though, unless I have to take passengers. That said, if it's one of the cheaper varieties of trolling motor, speed doesn't have much of an impact on battery life. The slower speeds are merely controlled in stages by a series of resistors, any unwanted energy is spent as heat... Also, careful wishing for rain during fire season, it can sometimes make the hard working volunteers and firefighters from doing their job properly, such as flying helicopters etc. We had a rather bad fire here back in 2017 and the media were quick to report that the rain wasn't welcomed by those hard at work. I'd never thought about it like that before.

Just beautiful. The rain while you stain is really a pain. One gets to thinking “All I want is a shed somewhere, far away from the cold sea air. Oh, wouldn’t it be lovely”… Why do I feel the urge to break into song and dance? Poem looks great. Have you considered abandoning the beta marine and just slap that trolling motor off of Limerick on there? It seems to do the trick on the video. It would be perfect for someone who wasn’t in a hurry to get where they are going.

Peter let me give you and your viewers some advice. When moving a vessel such as Poem without power in a restricted area, you should tie your dinghy along side with the rear of the dinghy and outboard AFT of the duck board. That way you can control the direction to the vessel you are moving. The way you did it gave you absolutely no control over Poem and if the wind had come up she would have taken off and you would have no control and doing what you did gave you zero ability to slow her down. Don't do that towing thing again. You were just lucky.

Looking good Peter, only an infinite number of coats to go because varnishing a wooden boat is never finished.. My experience varnishing a mahogany cabin house with Epifanes gloss varnish has been that it rolls on beautifully without thinning. Once you get your hand in with the roller you can even get a good finish without tipping. I use a 4" foam roller.

Next time you're down to bare wood you might consider a first coat of clear thinned stain as a stain controller. It works great to blend instead of blotch on unfinished or sanded softer wood on the first coat of colored stain. Not that you ever get to unfinished wood much, lol. She looks so nice. Being old and grey I'm not sure I'm all in on the old grey look of your clean wood deck. How does Blue Moon get all that creamy goodness into a Beer? Ive had milk shakes less creamy than Blue Moon Beer, lol.
@hammervision6252 Жыл бұрын
As an old boat owner (lots o bright work) and a woodworker, I have never understood the appeal of greyed out wood. To my eye, it always looks like someone was too lazy to keep up with the maintenance. That is obviously not the case here, the boat is a shining gem, but I think you may have missed an opportunity to offset the light wood against the dark. That said, great job, Poem is beautiful.

I am the guy that has an MGB with an alloy rover V8 ..... the aluminum alloy V8 is actually 40 pounds lighter than the original MGB 4 banger ...... so you see where I am now coming from .... but I also have nostalgia for the chevy straight 6 which I have driven in so many pick up trucks ..... please let us know your thoughts on the engine for Poem ....... you did pontificate on electric ..... but you ruled that out ... due to tactical issues Alan Boston

We haven't had rain in any real amount down in western Oregon in over a month. Usually it is on-and-off showers, but I guess we're in for a warm, dry summer. One thing I noted is that you didn't sand between coats of varnish on the windshield. Is that possible? I thought that you'd always have adhesion problems if you didn't sand between coats of varnish.

The Lifetime Wood Treatment looks and by description behaves exactly like iron vitrol /iron sulfate (FeSO₄×7H₂O). Its fairly common to use it in Norway to accelerate "weathering" of untreated (fresh) wood or to achieve a uniform "weathering" . Sold here by the kilo for around ($ 12). Works best for timber protected from rain or on naturally rot resistant wood if exposed to rain as the "protection" is mostly cosmetic.
