Have the same dark / black mould appearing in one corner where the wood gets damp during cold weather. This is primarily due to condensation which dries lastly at the base. The water based finish is peeling below over time and will look to re seal next year. Thanks for sharing

I fitted a new velux window in the summer and they now come with insulated collars to combat the cold bridging. The windows was also upvc so no more varnishing.

I have four similar Velux windows to refinish, all with some black mould, and one with a bit of wet rot on the outer frame. I've just removed the glazed part and cleaned/sanded the frame, taking a couple of hours and making a fair amount of dust. I then used some Ronseal wood hardener, which is currently drying, and have put a bit of bleach on the frame to see if it gets rid of the mould. Apparently, I should use vinegar though, so that's my next test. I have a small tub of Wickes ready-mixed wood filler to repair the rotten part (if this doesn't work I'll have to splice in a piece of new wood), and for varnishing, it'll probably be Ronseal Trade Exterior Clear, from Screwfix.

Did you end up sorting your windows? If so what ended up working?
@ParaBellum2024 Жыл бұрын
@@IkeaGoddess100 I used the filler etc. as above, and while it _has_ worked, it's not very tidy. Next time I decorate I'll probably paint over it to hide the repair.

Did you manage to get replacement plastic plugs & if so where from? The ones in mine are brittle due to being varnished & I'll have to break them to remove them 😐
@fiveminuteman3 жыл бұрын
Didn't replace the plugs but should be available from Velux. For a different project i bought universal plugs off ebay so that could be worth a go.

Hi! Have you removed the window from the frame? Thanks!
@fiveminuteman3 жыл бұрын
I kept it in place. Removing them if they are high up is a bit of a challenge.

Thanks so much for this. I have equally old windows I need to repair and will follow this. How long did it take you in total per window?
@fiveminuteman5 жыл бұрын
Sanding took ages and created a real mess. I think all in with sanding and multiple coats of varnish probably about 3 hours per window. That's only the outer frame though. Worth it though as the result is great.
@iisne5 жыл бұрын
In the end I found it easier (more accurate and less messy) to sand by hand rather than the electrical sander. Delighted with the results. Thanks again!

Hi, so do you use 2 coats of water based and then 1 of polyurethane?
@fiveminuteman5 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The finish has held well over winter.

@Brook Ready yeah I have a the same question too. In addition, could you not just apply the top coat (non-water based poly) and be done with it.

Can I pay you to come and do this for the three velux windows I have of this style in my house?
@fiveminuteman4 жыл бұрын
As much as I enjoyed doing the windows and they looked great after I'm not sure I'd be up for doing them again.

@@fiveminuteman Are you sure? I'm based in Northampton. How many days work do you think it would be to do a proper job of two windows of this size and a small sized one? All with bad errosion like you have in the video. Around and inch thick all round. Trying desperately to find someone who'll do them for me. What kind of person do you think I should reach out to? Decorators or carpenters? Hypothetocally, whatd be a sensible price to pay for it? Desperately researching but not very successfully so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Was there a bead of silicone in the corners on the window frame itself and if so did you clean that out and re-seal?
@fiveminuteman3 жыл бұрын
@@cjjohnson353 ours had no silicone, perhaps a tiny amount of wood filler.
