How to analyze an equity mutual fund?

Let's say you have shortlisted a couple of equity mutual funds, how do you choose between those? While it's almost impossible to predict which fund will do better, you can ensure that you can pick funds that are well managed. Also, picking funds just by looking at the past return is a recipe for disaster.

One shall not jsut shop around because the expense ratio is high. A good product is a good option so people do not have problems when they pay a little higher for such things.

As the funds are performing well I would preferably take the same funds in direct plan. Q1. What all parameters/charges should I look at? Q2. How do I calculate the TDS on closure of these mutual funds? Any document or info you can point to for this.
