Thinking back, this was the start of the end. Removing Aegon who is becoming a huge deal in the books and trying to make Varys's plan about supporting Daenerys meant D&D had to keep writing the clever characters themselves. And they are not clever writers.

For me, I enjoyed the slow burn of the series. Not rushing through dialogue, always wondering what the other was up to. Having characters be fleshed out so you were more interested in them.
