not a pilot but from my perspective with 3 out of 4 engines running normal a single engine failure is not a big deal so no need to declare an emergency.
@karlosbricks24136 жыл бұрын
Well, the BA flight at KPHX you did a couple months ago, cancelled their mayday, as the 747 is certified to fly on just 3 engines, both these flights could probably have continued to their destination, but since the BA268 incident in 2005, most carriers do not fly quad jets on 3 engines onwards on their journey and almost always have the policy to be the plane must land. I feel not declaring a mayday is fine, their flying in a certified state and if the shut down was only precautionary, then they don't really have any problems at all, they all seemed to handle it professionally, but can completely understand ATC's confusion on the matter as it is unusual to have that situation.

This remembers me of a joke we have hear in Italy. It goes like this: During a flight, all of a sudden the passengers hear a loud BANG. After a short time a voice comes out of the internal speakers: "Good morning, this is your captain speaking. If you look out of the right window, you can see some smoke coming out of the right engine. The engine is gone but there is no need to be worried, this aircraft can fly with one engine, no problem". After a while, a second BANG, this time even louder is heard, this time from the left side of the plane. The voice of the captain, extremely confident comes out from the speakers again: "This is the captain speaking. If you look out of the left window this time, you will notice some smoke coming out of the left engine. The engine is gone, but there is no need to be worried, this aircraft can fly without engines, no problem". After a short time a third loud BANG is heard by the passengers. Sure enough captain's voice comes out from the speakers: "Hello, this is a recorded message from your captain. If you look out of the window and see a parachute deploying, it's your captain waiving goodbye!".

The pilot is correct. A single engine failure on a light 74 is NOT an emergency. He is NOT, NOT, NOT compelled to declare an emergency for a single engine out in this case. An emergency declaration is at the discretion of the Capt under all circumstances. I'll also tell you that there have probably been a good number of 4 holers who have shut down an engine and never even made an announcement to either ATC or Pax(if any) through the years. Not a big deal...probably a more "seasoned" Capt in this case...
@victoru.27436 жыл бұрын
I concur, not an emergency, urgency maybe yes. By the way, not only the pilots can declare an emergency: Dispatch, Company Representatives, and ATC can declare an emergency for them ( humansystems.arc.nasa.gov/flightcognition/Publications/non_EAS/Declaring_An_Emergency.pdf ) . In a lot of videos in this channel you can see how atc asks for fuel and souls although the pilots didn't declare an emergency.
@lolvks6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that a 747 could fly all the way to Germany with just 3 engines provided the airline had authorization and the crews are trained. A 747 with 1 engine shut down is not an emergency at all.
@Statuquo6 жыл бұрын
It's why you have pan pan pan for minor issues that is not causing the plane to be unflightable as his standar configuration - but still provide you with direct routes, focus of ATC, priority on landing, and for other airplanes - a check of runway after your landing to prevent fluid leak or parts of planes that coud gone off on the touchdown on landing !
@Statuquo6 жыл бұрын
A problem is single issue that could be solve // a crash is a multiple of problems that are occuring in a lap of time that end to the total failure of the airplane.
@TakeDeadAim6 жыл бұрын
A light 748 could fly a LONG way with two(assuming one on each side) not even needing climb power to sustain straight and level flight. Now, if it were an asymmetrical thrust issue that would be different but still very manageable.

per the .65 not only the pilot can declare an emergency but facility personnel (ATC) or the officials responsible for the operation of the aircraft can also declare an emergency for an aircraft. While ATC are very well trained at separating aircraft, not all are informed of every aicraft's capabilities and if a less exerienced controller was in position at the time, they could have declared an emergency for him. Regardless if an aircraft has an engine out, they should recieve priority handling.
@FluppiLP5 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't forget that pilots only have such an event once in their whole career. Lots of them don't have to declare an emergency at all in their life. So whether they declare an emergency is entirely their training, their assessment and their company procedure. If in their training BAW pilots are trained to declare an emergency no matter what then that's what they do. Either DLH doesn't require anyone to declare an emergency in case of an engine failure on a 4 engined aircraft or in one of their simulator sessions the pilots did it without declaring an emergency or the pilots just assessed the situation and thought: We don't have a big problem here. The DLH flight probably was a lot lighter than the BAW flight and that's why the pilots didn't feel like it was a big issue. I can only guess but I don't see that any pilot did something wrong in this case.
@redshirt495 жыл бұрын
Standard Lufthansa procedure. Single engine failure with all other systems functioning normally is not considered an emergency. Protocol does state that they need to route to nearest available airport for a full maintenance check-up, which is what they did. Emergency should only be declared if imminent danger to the plane is suspected or evident. Completely by the book by this guy.

Urrghhh. Totally agree that 3 engine in a 747 - IF you have established the cause of the engine failure - is not an emergency, but by not calling an emergency you put doubt into all the other actors in the scenario. You put everyone else into a mindset of... "errr what should i do here". An emergency is a well drilled procedure, people can run it backwards. By NOT calling an emergency AND declaring a major defect causes more anxiety to the rest of system. In short i would call an emergency and be done with it.

I think because he informed about an engine failure he also should have declared a PAN-PAN. So, everything would have been fine, no confusion, no emergency. Something similiar happend to a flight from Zurich to Singapore, where the pilots where forced to shut down 1 of 4 engines due to high oil temperature shortly after departure. No emergency, no need to become nervous, just stayed calm. However, the declared a PAN-PAN and took the needed steps for flying back. With all their calmness they ate some swiss chocolate during this process. ;-) The point is: because they declared a PAN-PAN no confusion took place.

1 engine failure is not an emergency on a 747. In fact, they can, per Capt’s prerogative, continue to destination.

What if it is a fire?
@iflyg46 жыл бұрын
VASAviation - In the airline world, an engine failure isn’t an emergency in a 4 engine aircraft. An engine fire is different and IS an emergency but it’s classified differently than a failure. It’s in a completely different section of the checklist and it’ll tell you whether to divert to nearest suitable. But it’s a good point, different “engine failures” can demand an emergency or not. I was simply talking about the posted video and reference to a simple engine failure.

After landing: Captain- Ohh shit this was a real aircraft. I thought it was a simulator.

This bird can climb at takeoff with just 3 engines. At landing, after crossing the pond, it would be much lighter due to fuel consumption. So no worries at all.

This aircraft did not cross the Atlantic, it was returning to JFK after taking off from JFK and experiencing an engine failure during climb.

One engine dead on B747 is not big deal, for that event no emergency is necessary, just normal approach and landing. Eventually PAN, but while no other problems exists it was no hurry.
@youtubemodsaresnowflakelef76922 жыл бұрын
two engines dead wouldn't be a big deal either, especially if they're not overloaded/heavy, which they weren't. Could've still even maintained stable flight or even climb...
@quenchize6 жыл бұрын
It would depend on exactly how the engine failed. If the fan disk burst you should probably declare. If it starts to run a bit hot and you shut it down as a precaution meh. Guess what? only the pilots are in possession of full information about the exact mode of the failure. So if they say it is not an urgent situation it isn't. Declaring MAYDAY is just sick. MAYDAY means immediate threat to life. Remember these are germans probably handler didn't write JET-A clearly on the manifest for that tank so they shut the engine down as a precaution :-D

I have a good friend of mine who is 380 captain and he told me that they receive training so as not to declare an emergency when they lose an engine, they even continue climbing and cruising without deviating. 😣

this reminds me of a crash around JFK because the pilot mistaken Emergency with Priority, obviously English is not their first language, the tower refused their request, they crashed

Lufthansa Pilot to ATC Tower, we've lost the airplane including all passengers, but we're not an emergency. Since me and my copilot have parachutes, we'd like to land on Runway 23R. Please Confirm. 😂
