Also BB2 is closed for aircraft with wingspan greater than 36m (118'). Source: Jeppesen Chart 20-9 of KORD. The 777 is a liiiiiittle bit bigger than that, so ATC definetly messed up sending them there. But to agree with you -> The (Jeppesen) chart has a note and a visual indicator for BB2 saying exactly that - so the pilots could have avoided that with a quick but thourogh brief of the taxi route.

Obviously, the pilots are responsible for clearance while taxiing, but the controller should not have sent them down a taxiway that wasn't wide enough for the aircraft.

Reminds me of the British Airways A380 that had to land at Minneapolis-St. Paul video. There the pilot corrected the controller and requested to taxi back along the runway because they couldn't fit on the taxiway the controller gave them. Which is understandable in that case since A380s typically don't land there.

doesn't matter if ATC give you a clearance, as a commander you have the responsibility to reject their clearance if you are unable. There is a significant chance this was after a long flight so fatigue and "get-home-itis" were involved leading to the crew to lose situational awareness and then the incident happened. ATC shouldn't have cleared them onto BB or Z (wherever the collision happened), but the crew had the chance to rectify ATC's mistake. They didn't. Thankfully, the only things hurt was a pole, a 777 wing and some ego's. Everyone will learn from it, that's what matters

Every chart I can see if the airport shows that BB2 is restricted in some way, and a few seconds of further investigation shows that the taxiway has a wingspan restriction of 36m. ATC shouldn’t have sent them there, and the pilots are at fault for accepting the clearance down a taxiway clearly marked as being restrictive in some way.

Just to be clear though, on FAA charts anyway, that little nugget is buried in a blob of text that, at normal print size, would cover an entire page. When you're taxiing around the airport, there's a degree of trust to the Ground controller to give you a valid route. "Ground, thank you for that complex taxi instruction. Please let me re-read the novel that is ground restrictions at O'hare while I double-check your work". Bottom line - this kind of airport navigation is extremely outdated. The aviation industry is consistently reliant on large blobs of text that vary in relevance.

Excuse my ignorance, but are controllors not aware of the what type of plane is under their control at any given time? If so, surely they must have some idea of the wingspan of the plane they are currently directing and be familiar with widths of taxiways at the airport where they work day in, day out. If yes to all of the above- and assuming the pilot didn't zig when he should have zagged- how on earth did a dirty great 777 get sent down a taxiway that couldn't accommodate it?

Depends on the charts. If they were using LIDO the APC chart did NOT show this taxiway as unavailable for that type. The crew operate to literally 100s of destinations and cannot be expected to know every limitation at every airport even though it was probably buried in the AOIs . Add to this jet lag and brutal rosters. This was the ground controllers fault who should have known better given that all he has to worry about is one part (ground) of one airport.

I think ATC, the pilots, AND the airline have shared responsibility here.. Pilots should have info on the airport they are flying into including the width of all taxiways. Had the pilot known that, he could have given ATC Ground a negative on the request due to restricted wingtip clearance. Ground controllers should have a chart showing which aircraft can operate on taxiways more narrow than others. If the pilot wasn't sure he should have requested a wingwalker. But the airline cannot blame the incident entirely on the pilot. They should always provide the pilot with the information needed.
@chrispustelnikas8922
@chrispustelnikas8922 2 жыл бұрын
Pilots have that information on taxiway diagrams. ATC knows all the taxiway restrictions and has access to charts that show all aircraft wingspans. They can also just ask a pot his wingspan if not sure. They both messed up. GC shouldn't have sent him there. Pilot should've caught his mistake.
@EdOeuna
@EdOeuna 2 жыл бұрын
Many airports have ground charts that are specifically for heavy and super aircraft and so show only the taxiways that are usable by those aircraft. The information for restricted taxiways is easily found. The pilots can set the park brake and look for the reason. They can query ATC as well.

@@smncrowe Law states the PIC is legally responsible for the aircraft because obviously someone has to be, but that doesn't mean blame automatically gets assigned to the PIC. In this situation it's perfectly reasonable to assume that the ground controller had far better knowledge of the taxiway limitations and was negliglent in his instructions. Yes, some blame resides with the PIC for not checking, but complacency sets in and he trusted the ground controller wouldn't be wreckless in giving an instruction. In the end both of them bear responsibility.

Well, I 100% blame the Ground controller for this incident. They know their airport the best, and know which taxiways have restrictions, as well as the largest aircraft allowed for each -- that's part of their training. Additionally, they will have the most recent airport & taxiway construction & maintenance information -- which is not always included in the NOTAMs or on the newest plates. This is an expensive mistake, and since it was the controller who authorized the route, he will be removed from the line, reprimanded, receive additional training, and finally return to the line under supervision.
@mlehky
@mlehky 2 жыл бұрын
Why blame the controller, the taxiway charts show no 777 wing span restriction at that location and the bays there are specifically indicated as wide body capable. There is nothing I can find published to indicate the cleared taxi route would be a problem. This is going to become a legal blame fest.

The controller is partially at fault here no doubt, but at the end of the day the pilots are the ones in the cockpit and responsible for the airplane. Im positive there is a taxiway restriction chart available to them somewhere that they could’ve checked. Also, I know it’s a bit hypocritical of me to say after this but aviation is not about placing fault or blame on any one party, it’s about learning from mistakes and making sure they don’t happen again
