Great points and discussion. I have been shooting in cold weather, and I mean cold weather her in Yellowknife since 2011 and never have had an issue, even at -30/40. I do allow my gear to acclimatize and never take it out of the bag until a good 6-8 hours has passed, usually over night. The only issue that I have encountered is my D850 not lasting long in -30 weather, whereas others have had no issue. Switched to mirrorless two years ago and so far so good when it comes to extreme cold weather.

Ziploc does great with camera and small lens, but if you are out with a superzoom, I recommend using like a 13 gallon garbage bag. I do that when I forget my camera bag. Remember to take the battery and card out before you go inside so that you can just let your camera sit and slowly adjust to being inside. I do wildlife and northern lights down to -10F, and this works for me.

I bought the extra large zip loc bags (2.5 gallon)at walmart the other day.

Oh man that is a great point. I should have added a garbage bag segment in the video. Totally slipped my mind. I use a garbage bag when I shoot with my 300mm 2.8. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the info. I just googled it. Looks like OLED screens are a little more resistant to damage from cold.

Good advice! I do this with my drones, as well, coming in from the cold here in the Pacific Northwest. I need a filter to make me look un-retro!
@vaskoobscura_19 күн бұрын
Ya that is a great idea for drones. They get pretty cold up there.

Can you add a desicant pack into the brag to absorb moisture?
@vaskoobscura_19 күн бұрын

What about wrapping the gears in fabrics before inserting them in the airtight plasticbag ? If not compromizing the process; then what would be the best fabric ? flees, polyester, wool, thin felt ..? What about adding (aswell) a rice-bag or silicone-cristals-bag (available at drugstores) in each such plastic bags ? (to be dryed afterwards in microwave oven - would ruin the fabrics?) ?
@vaskoobscura_19 күн бұрын
You can also keep your camera in your camera bag and let it warm up in there. I don't know if fabric would work that great it might help a little. The problem is air travels through fabric and the fabric should also be cold. If you warp your cold camera in warm fabric you'll get condensation in your camera for sure. A plastic bag is best. You can find bags everywhere just keep one in your camera when you shoot in the cold.

@@vaskoobscura_ THANK You for having taken your time to answer me so well - but I now have totally corrected my above questions as U just realize they did not convey what I meant -SORRY ! You might want to remove - or modify Your answer ? Sorry again! ..Yes the bags with cloth and ricebag/silicone would all have to be at least same if not colder temperature than the equippment. (at home kept in freezer, when traveling : joined to the equippment...

The Olympus TG-6/OM TG-7 are weatherized cameras and is weather sealed. It has a larger phone-sized sensor of 12MP, but take decent pictures when light is adequate. It is also waterproof down to 30'.
@vaskoobscura_19 күн бұрын
Don't be fooled. Weatherized and weather sealed don't mean waterproof. You can't take those cameras underwater which means air, including humidity, can get inside the camera and condensation can form on the electronics. Weather sealing on a camera only means you can shoot in the rain that's it. It's not air tight.

So what if your house is like 18c then you just quickly walk to your car and drive for an hour or 2 and your car is about the same would it be okay to leave your camera in the camera bag all the time or?

@@vaskoobscura_ Yep it will be 41 C here on Sunday. A bit early in the season. Were expecting a bad wildfire season this season. And yes to keeping the camera out of the car and out of the sun.

Just make sure you have dehumidifier in your house then this isn’t necessary as dehumidifier’s always get rid of moisture in the air which can damage electronics
@vaskoobscura_19 күн бұрын
True a dehumidifier helps. Winter air is naturally less humid and with a forced air heater the RH in my studio drops to 20% in the winter. It's dry as a bone in the studio.
