Imagine private schools claiming they are charities. Joke.

If we are going to put VAT on private school fees let’s put it on all education, universities, nurseries, weekend sports clubs after all these are all private businesses providing education of some sort. Oh wait no let’s just target kids between the ages of 5-16 😂

All universities are private institutions - there isn't a state option. Unlike schools, where the vast majority are state. Private schools are a luxury.
@user-il1zt8sp5g
@user-il1zt8sp5g Ай бұрын
@@peteymyster completely irrelevant in the eyes of the law I’m afraid! we don’t tax things based on if there is a state alternative or not! By that logic all cars would be sold VAT free! By there very definition universities, nurseries, language schools, sports schools/clubs are private education as they are trying to apply to independent schools! Therefore they should all be taxed all of the above are also luxuries especially university!

@@peteymyster no we don’t u claim private school is a luxury I would argue university is a luxury! Not everyone gets the opportunity and it’s expensive they are also highly selective in a lot of cases and under the terms that the Labour Party set out they fit the exact same description as a private school! Which is again a private organisation supplying education. Did you know that IT training companies don’t charge VAT? Why do they get a ‘tax break’ but Labour would rather tax children!!! Politics of envy and spite nothing more!

This women is an example of why people send their children to independent schools, how simple minded and naive can someone be to actually think all privately educated children come from rich families and they won’t leave over an extra £200 a month. I send my daughter to a private school and will NOT be able to afford the increase so yes darling, children will be knocking on them state school doors to further stretch an already failing system. The sacrifices many families make just to put their children into an environment that is the most suitable for them is not as simple as it being a “luxury” actually it very stressful and yes it may be a choice but it’s not one taken very lightly when you see your child struggling with the state school structure and you have a lack of good schools in your area! If you want to talk about “fair” why do some areas have outstanding schools and others have satisfactory schools?Surly if you want to make it “fair” the focus should be on ensuring ALL state schools are “outstanding” and no the money from the VAT won’t even begin to fix the issue. Pathetic!

I'm not rich either but still expected to pay VAT on the goods and services that I purchase. I don't see any reason why people who send their kids to private school should have any exemptions.

They make a surplus what's that a posh profit.

I think what he means is that whilst the “business” makes a profit, there are no owners or shareholders who take that profit, it is reinvested in things such as new facilities, adding VAT would, in theory, simply mean that they would just claim back VAT as a business expense and not pay it anyway because of how VAT works.

In my network, many wealthy families appointed special tutor for 11+ and their kids are in grammar school. High quality education and no fees at all. What about that imbalance in society?

I went to a private school. My school offered scholarships and bursaries. Scholarships to those that did well in the 11+ or common entrance exams and bursaries to those that weren't academically brilliant but had parents who couldn't pay the full fees or even any of the fees. So you can send your kids to a private school, even if they're not academically brilliant or if you don't have enough cash. As someone who used to be a physics teacher for while in secondary state schools, pre-pandemic; the difference between private and state schools is that private schools are more likely to have subject specialist teachers who are degree qualified to teach the subject that they have been hired for. In state schools, you are more likely to find a history teacher teaching maths or a P.E. teacher teaching biology because the schools can't get qualified staff. The reason why state schools can't find the appropriate staff is because of poor pay but also workload; there are more kids in state schools than private schools hence more kids to teach and more homework to mark.

How can education be value added, it’s a basic right. Is the intention to make the UK less educated or reduce the higher skill level.

The only thing I'll say is the VAT should be income based on the school fees. Alot send them to private school and struggle to do so just to give them the best possible chance in life. Then those who have no financial worries. Hit the top earners not the average person

HMRC VAT currently states that education provided by an appropriate organisation is a school or university is exempt from VAT. It is irrevelent whether it's a charity or a profit making organisation. It be better to add 1% to the basic rate of tax to fund improvements to state education, that way: - 1. The cost is spread fairly across the tax paying population, just like virtually everything else 2. People who choose to send children to private schools will still pay the extra 1% but see no benefit from it. Yes people from abroad sending their kids to UK based private schools won't pay the extra 1% but they are still putting money into the UK economy. Sending a kid to a private school is a choice, so is going to university. Labour will need to do some pretty serious verbal gymnastics to tax one and not the other. Not a lot of joined up thinking😢

if paying for school is a luxury, then the people of Africa must be the most wealthiest in the world. the reality is, NO ONE works for free. by saying you pay for it, then it should be taxed, then what is the difference with public schools. the public are already paying for those too, the only difference is, the government is the middle man
@MinkieWinkle

Then the parents of children who gi to private school should get income tax reductions, since they are not receiving any public schools that they are paying foor
